TWGC 26 (265+lbs, D3): Los Angeles Qualifier - Round 1 PBP Commentary


Coming up we have a super heavyweight Tycoon World Grappling Championship rules bout between Chuck Gracie (ranked 5692 p4p, 0 weight class) and Danny Cormier (ranked 23776 p4p, 505 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Chuck Gracie has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Chuck Gracie seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

And in the blue corner, fighting out of Hilo, with a TWGC record of 0 wins and 0 losses; Danny Cormier!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Don Winkell and Timothy Bukovac.

Gracie is trying hard to land a takedown here. Cormier sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Gracie shoots in looking for a takedown. Cormier tries to sprawl out of it but Gracie keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Cormier manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Cormier shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Gracie manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Cormier might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Gracie haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Cormier stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gracie swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Gracie has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Cormier wants to control from the top but Gracie keeps moving.

Cormier has gone for a leg lock! Gracie slips out almost immediately though and dives into Cormier's guard.

Cormier throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Gracie escapes and throws Cormier's legs to the side, diving into side control!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.

Cormier is trying to control Gracie's posture but Gracie avoids it.
Cormier is letting Gracie control him for a moment.
We've been hearing that Gracie has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

You can see the frustration on Cormier's face as Gracie controls the position.

Cormier is trying to control Gracie's posture but Gracie avoids it.
Cormier tries to bench press Gracie off him but Gracie keeps the position.

Gracie has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Gracie is staying tight to Cormier's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Cormier is trying to control Gracie's posture but Gracie avoids it.
Gracie takes a little break here. Cormier wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

Gracie seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Cormier for as long as he can get away with.

Gracie's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Cormier tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Gracie wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that's the end of the fight!
Gracie takes the fight on points by 5 to 2.
