Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
5 - 7 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Jonathan Maia!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Sonny Vatu!
The judges for this bout are Michael Johnstone, Dirk Anderson and Winston Alpacca.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vatu tries to clinch but Maia moves out of range.
A lazy left from Vatu finds it's target.
Maia takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Maia tries for a takedown but Vatu sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
A good leg kick by Vatu.
Vatu lands a really nice looking cross but Maia seems unphased.
Vatu has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.
Maia closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Maia shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Vatu digs a good body shot into Maia's ribs.
Maia shoots in for a takedown but Vatu shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Jonathan Maia seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Vatu lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Maia takes one on the button.
Vatu lands a jab.
Maia takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Maia gets a takedown into half guard.
Maia is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Vatu defends it well.
Maia drops an elbow to the side of Vatu's head.
Both fighters have adopted an aggressive gameplan on the ground!
That's one minute gone in the round.
Maia is working for a submission of some sort.
Maia stops Vatu from getting back to his feet.
Maia passes to side control.
Vatu is trying to buck Maia off.
Maia is working to tighten his grip on Vatu's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Vatu has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Maia is really squeezing tight and eventually Vatu passes out! Maia breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:50 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Jonathan Maia!
After winning the bout, Jonathan Maia thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
