Coming up we have a lightweight Tycoon World Grappling Championship rules bout between Ricardo Gracie (ranked 2290 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matvey Pavlov (ranked 1304 p4p, 150 weight class). Pavlov has chosen Prokofiev - Dance of the Knights as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the lightweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Montreal, with a TWGC record of 6 wins and 6 losses; Ricardo Gracie! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 12 wins and 11 losses; Matvey Pavlov! The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Frank Antenori and Don Winkell.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Gracie clinches with his opponent.
Pavlov drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Gracie gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Gracie is pressed up against the cage. Pavlov has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Gracie down to the mat. Gracie avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance. Pavlov looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Ricardo Gracie has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Matvey Pavlov. Pavlov fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Gracie avoids it really well and circles away. Gracie moves into the clinch successfully.
Gracie has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Pavlov regains guard immediately. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Gracie (2) vs (0) Pavlov Pavlov looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Pavlov working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Gracie has passed into half guard!
Pavlov is trying to get back to full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Pavlov won't allow Gracie to pass to mount. Pavlov felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it. Gracie is keen to just control but Pavlov is a slippery customer. We've been hearing good reports from Gracie's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Gracie is taking a breather. Pavlov says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Pavlov is looking for a sweep. Gracie is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Gracie moves nicely into side control. Score +3 for passing guard: Gracie (5) vs (0) Pavlov Pavlov prevents Gracie from improving position. Pavlov struggling a bit here. Gracie wants to take a breather but Pavlov manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Gracie. Gracie pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Pavlov is keeping the position for now.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Pavlov is controlling Gracie's posture. Pavlov is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Pavlov looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Gracie advances position into side control! Score +3 for passing guard: Gracie (8) vs (0) Pavlov Gracie is looking to take a break and control but Pavlov is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Gracie is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Pavlov knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Pavlov manages to work his way to half guard, despite Gracie's best efforts.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gracie in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Pavlov tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Gracie!
