PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Mark Barboza (ranked 24822 p4p, 563 weight class) and David Danis (ranked 5852 p4p, 470 weight class). Barboza comes to the cage accompanied by You don't know. The key to victory for Mark Barboza has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mark Barboza!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, David Danis!
The judges for this bout are James Glass, Steven Brown and James Atkins.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Danis throws an off balance right hand
and Barboza counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Barboza swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Danis holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Danis wants the takedown. Barboza is fighting it off but Danis persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Barboza's guard against the cage.

Barboza isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Danis stacks Barboza on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Danis!
Barboza is trying to control Danis's posture but Danis avoids it.
Danis wants to control but Barboza is keeping him busy.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Danis decides to stand back up. Danis steps back and let's Barboza get back to his feet.

Danis takes the fight into the clinch.

Danis breaks the clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Danis gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Barboza looking for a takedown.
Barboza is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
A battle for position here, against the cage.
Barboza is trying to maintain a safe position but Danis gets an underhook and turns Barboza into the cage.
Maybe Barboza would be better served going for some more strikes rather than trying to control so much.
Danis is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Barboza to keep the fight standing.

Danis pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Danis thumps Barboza with a low kick.

Danis moves into the clinch.

Danis pulls guard effortlessly.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Danis looking to hit a scissor sweep but Barboza is one step ahead there.
Danis has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Danis had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Barboza defends it easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Barboza is fighting to break Danis's control of his arms but Danis is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Danis working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Barboza.

Danis escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Barboza gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Barboza will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Danis trying to keep a closed guard but Barboza is proving a slippery customer.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Danis working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Barboza has passed into half guard!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Danis has his hands clasped together around Barboza's back. He's all about the action.
Danis is looking to improve his position.
Danis is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Danis is looking for a sweep. Barboza is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

David Danis dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Barboza attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Danis on the wrong end of a nice jab.
Barboza moves in looking to clinch but Danis pushes him off.
Danis fails with the takedown
and Barboza counters with a stiff right hand.

Danis gets the takedown into side control.
Barboza is looking to regain half guard here but Danis keeps moving and retains side control.

Danis stands up.
Danis has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Danis checks the leg kick.
Barboza throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Danis.

Danis gets the takedown into side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Barboza struggling a bit here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Danis tries to score with some ground and pound. Barboza controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

Danis has hold of Barboza's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Barboza tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Danis cranks the arm and Barboza screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Barboza, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:34 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). David Danis!
A less than humble David Danis misjudged his post fight interview somewhat and came across a little too arrogant whilst trying to hype up his own abilities.
