Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Daniel Mendoza! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Stunna Boy! The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Johanna Lukiainen and Tarja Halkonen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Boy scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Mendoza knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Boy on the ground. Boy throws an elbow but Mendoza slips to the side and avoids it well. Boy tries for a kimura but Mendoza is defending well. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. You can see the frustration on Mendoza's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Boy landing strikes. Boy wants to control but Mendoza is keeping him busy. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Boy is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Mendoza knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Boy wants to lay and pray for a moment but Mendoza keeps working.
That's one minute gone in the round. Boy thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Mendoza is looking to reverse the position. Boy prevents Mendoza from escaping the position. Boy wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Mendoza, who protects the arm well. Boy trying to control the action but Mendoza is working from the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Mendoza is trying to improve his position. Boy trying to control the position but Mendoza is working away. Boy wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Mendoza, who protects the arm well. Mendoza struggling a bit here. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Boy is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Mendoza has escaped the position, nice work there. Mendoza is looking to reverse the position. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Stunna Boy dominated that round. That's time! Back to the action!
Boy tries for a takedown but Mendoza circles away easily and Mendoza counters with a straight right hand. Boy has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Boy there as he acknowledges the shot. Boy has tried to improve his agility in the runup to this fight. Mendoza dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Mendoza drops Boy with a huge uppercut! Boy drops to the floor like a sack of potatoes. Mendoza is raining down punches and the ref stops the fight! This one is all over!
