PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jake Bird (ranked 2237 p4p, 272 weight class) and Caspian Tennessen (ranked 3184 p4p, 348 weight class). Tennessen has chosen Manowar - Warriors of the World as his entrance music. Caspian Tennessen will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jake Bird!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Caspian Tennessen!
The judges for this bout are Francis DeMontford, Steve Erwin and Ben Hemmingworth.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bird stuffs the takedown attempt from Tennessen. Tennessen gets slowly back to his feet.
Bird was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Tennessen shoots in for a takedown but Bird shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Bird is looking to counter punch.
Bird throws a lazy uppercut

and Tennessen counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Bird!
Tennessen creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Bird sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Tennessen trying to control the action but Bird is working from the bottom.
Bird is looking to reverse the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bird is working hard here to advance position.
Bird might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Bird is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Tennessen pulls his head out easily.
Bird has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.

Tennessen looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Bird avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Tennessen.

Tennessen wants to control but Bird is keeping him busy.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Tennessen is trying to control the action in half guard but Bird is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Bird connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
Tennessen tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Bird defends well and Tennessen ends up having to push Bird into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Jake Bird has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Caspian Tennessen.
Tennessen shoots in but Bird avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Tennessen manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Bird on his heels. He'll look to pass Bird's guard now, I'm sure.

Caspian Tennessen dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Bird lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Bird's jab looks to have found its range, popping Tennessen under the eye.


It looks like Caspian Tennessen has been cut.
Bird misses with an uppercut. Tennessen saw that one coming.
Tennessen changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
We've been informed that Tennessen has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Bird throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.

Tennessen feints and as Bird raises his hands in defense, Tennessen changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Bird is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Bird had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Tennessen defends it easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Bird has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Tennessen can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Tennessen must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Tennessen drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Tennessen jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Bird is looking for a triangle but Tennessen pushes his legs off easily.

Tennessen got a little sloppy there for a moment and Bird has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Tennessen has managed to get both his arms back between Bird's legs - danger averted.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Tennessen looking to improve position, pressing down on Bird's thigh with his hand. Bird seems to be working to lock up a guilotine though... is Tennessen paying attention? Apparently not! He's locked it up tight! Tennessen's face has turned purple! Will he tap? Will he! YES! He's tapped! Bird picked his opening and made it count! Great finish!
