Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Julio marques! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Anthony Sanders! The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Columbo Gatti and Dean Styles.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sanders gets a takedown into half guard. Sanders looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Sanders looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. marques wants to improve his position but Sanders is controlling well.
Sanders works his way into side control. Sanders misses with an attempted head punch from side control. Sanders sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but marques is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
marques tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Sanders wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Sanders tries to move to mount but marques blocks the move with his legs. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! You can see the frustration on marques's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's one minute gone in the round.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Sanders closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Sanders lands in his opponent's guard. Sanders controlling from the top position. Sanders has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. marques is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Sanders thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. marques working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sanders doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sanders manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Sanders drops back for a leg here. A bit of a high risk move... He's looking for a kneebar by the looks of things. Now both of them are looking for submissions. Sanders seems to have locked his on tight now - marques screams in pain and taps out furiously! It certainly was a high risk move but it's paid off for Sanders, as he picks up the win!
