Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jorge Cassel! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Scott Smith! The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Jorge Garcia and Dean Styles.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A jab from Cassel does it's job there. Smith with a lazy takedown attempt and Cassel counters with a three punch combo that has Smith backing up. Smith nods at Cassel to acknowledge the strikes. Cassel has managed to clinch.
Smith keeps control of Cassel as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks. Smith is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage. With the two fighters working up against the cage, Smith just misses with a elbow thrown towards Cassel's brow. Smith wants to get back to striking at distance but Cassel won't allow it.
Smith's coach down at Cozad MMA New York was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Smith's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight. Cassel lands a right hand that snaps the head of Smith backwards. Cassel scores with a shoulder strike. Smith has Cassel pushed against the cage. Good anti-grappling being displayed by Cassel as Smith tries to tie him up. Smith tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Cassel smiles and moves away.
Smith should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Smith tries to clinch there but Cassel circles away.
Cassel lands with a shot to the body. Cassel drops Smith with a beautiful combination! Smith stares up at his opponent, who ushers him back to his feet - Cassel is looking for the KO!
Smith is rocked!
That's one minute gone in the round. Cassel moves into the clinch. Smith is still on wobbly legs! Can Cassel finish him? Cassel drops Smith onto one knee with a big uppercut from the clinch! Smith is propped up by the cage and works his way back to his feet! Cassel manages to break the clinch.
Smith loses concentration momentarily and Cassel pounces with a three punch combo! Right, left, right! Smith crashes face first to the mat, out cold! Cassel finishes this one with a fantastically precise combo! Great stuff.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:16 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Jorge Cassel!
