Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Joao Silvera! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Masa Funaki! The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, Phil Schofield and Richard Clark.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Silvera throws the kick towards the body but Funaki avoids it. Funaki misses with a body shot.
Funaki has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Silvera is landing a low percentage of strikes. Nice body kick from Silvera. Silvera keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Silvera. Funaki shrugs it off though. Silvera lands a nice shot that snaps Funaki's head back.
It looks like Masa Funaki has been cut. Silvera lands a kick to the ribs of his opponent. Nice work there - in and out in a flash.
Joao Silvera seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Silvera scores with a hook to the body. Funaki takes a step back and tries to catch his breath. Silvera ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent. Crunch! Silvera slams his shin into Funaki's torso. Funaki walks forward, straight into a front kick from Silvera. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Funaki throws a jab when Silvera was well out of range. Nice cross by Silvera. Silvera seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym. Funaki takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Silvera lands a head kick. Funaki smiles back at him and beckons him forward. Silvera with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Funaki to score with a decent uppercut. Funaki sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs. Funaki throws a body kick that misses. An attempted straight right counter from Silvera misses the target. Silvera lands a big head kick that sends Funaki tumbling to the mat! Silvera takes a step backwards and waves Funaki back to his feet - he wants the finish!
Funaki is rocked! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Funaki walks right into a perfectly timed right hook and goes down hard! He's out cold! The ref cradles Funaki limp body while Silvera jumps on to the cage and waves to the roaring crowd. Wow that was just a brutal knockout!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:31 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Joao Silvera! Joao Silvera took to the mic after the fight and begged the organizational hierarchy for a shot at the title.
