PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Carlos Ruas (ranked 675 p4p, 30 weight class) and Umberto Reem (ranked 1049 p4p, 30 weight class). Reem has chosen Bad Reputation as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 19 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Carlos Ruas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 27 - 16 - 2, fighting out of Las Vegas, Umberto Reem!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Taro Takaoka and Shirou Masuda.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Reem stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Reem wants it to stay on the feet.
Ruas sets himself, and Reem steps forward looking for the clinch! Ruas avoids it this time.
Reem throws a jab when Ruas was well out of range.

Ruas gets a takedown into half guard.
Ruas trying to control the action but Reem is working from the bottom.
Ruas prevents Reem from improving his position.

Ruas is working for a kimura here but Reem manages to reverse the position and he's now in Ruas's guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Ruas is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Reem avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Reem wants to control from the top but Ruas keeps moving.
I've been told that Reem has been drilling his wrestling of late, which has already helped him take this fight to the mat. Let's see how much of an impact it has on the outcome of the ground game.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ruas looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Ruas has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

Ruas working for a triangle but Reem defends it easily.
Ruas doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Reem is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Ruas is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Ruas is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Ruas is working hard here to advance position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Ruas missing with a left hand there. Reem was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Ruas takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.


It looks like Carlos Ruas has been cut.
Ruas walks into a stiff left hand from Reem.
A jab lands there for Ruas.

Ruas slips a jab from Reem.
Reem ducks under a wild hook from Ruas.
A decent looking cross lands there for Ruas.
Reem slips a jab from Ruas.
Reem tries to counter with a clinch but Ruas shakes him off and moves away.

Ruas shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Ruas trying to mount his opponent but Reem defends it.
Ruas is thwarting Reem's attempts to control the position.
Reem is refusing to be controlled, as Ruas sits in half guard.
Reem is controlling Ruas's position as best he can from this difficult position.

Ruas trying to advance position but Reem counters by regaining guard.
Ruas trying to control the position from guard on top but Reem is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Reem not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Ruas wants to control from the top but Reem keeps moving.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Ruas tries to free his leg and advance position but Reem is retaining full guard.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Ruas misses with a takedown
and Reem counters with a one-two to the body.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Umberto Reem will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Carlos Ruas's cut.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Reem paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Reem takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Ruas shoots in for a takedown but Reem shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Reem throws a hook but Ruas avoids it easily.
Ruas goes for a double leg but Reem avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Reem continues to drive forward.
Reem throws a poor cross that misses

and Ruas counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Ruas is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Reem defends it well.
Reem is doing well to control the position and prevent Ruas from advancing to side control.
Carlos Ruas overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Reem is looking to control Ruas's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Reem avoid being mounted?

Ruas is looking to advance position but Reem won't allow it.
Ruas wants to lay and pray for a moment but Reem keeps working.
Ruas is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.
Ruas wants to control from the top but Reem keeps moving.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Ruas is trying to get an arm triangle but Reem is defending well.
Ruas tries to move into full mount but can't pass Reem's legs.
Ruas trying to control the action but Reem is working from the bottom.
Reem gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!

Reem is controlling an arm, preventing Ruas from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.
Ruas trying to control but Reem is having none of it.
Reem sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Ruas wants to lay and pray for a moment but Reem keeps working.

Ruas is working for a submission of some sort.
Ruas tries to pass the half guard into mount. Reem knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Ruas is trying to work for a kimura but Reem is defending well.
Ruas has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Reem prevents Ruas from taking his back.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Ruas is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Reem has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Reem!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Ruas checks a low kick from Reem.
Jab by Reem.
Both fighters circling a little - Reem finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.
Ruas lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Reem circles away quickly and effectively.

Ruas tries to keep at a distance but Reem has taken the fight into the clinch.

Reem slowing the pace effectively.

Reem's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Ruas darts in looking for a takedown but Reem gets double underhooks and turns Ruas into the cage.
Reem moves into range and connects with a jab.
Reem throws a leg kick which misses Ruas's front leg but catches the back leg as Ruas tries to avoid it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Reem lands a two punch combo.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Reem thuds a left hand into Ruas's body.

Reem pushes Ruas up against the cage in a clinch.
Reem has Ruas pressed against the cage.
Reem controlling the action here for a moment.
Reem continues to stall. The referee tells him to work or he's going to break them up.

Reem swings wildly with an uppercut but Ruas uses good head movement to avoid it.
Ruas fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Reem tries a body shot but Ruas blocks it.
Reem tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Ruas drops down looking for an ankle pick but Reem pulls his leg out and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Carlos Ruas. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Ruas shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Ruas shoots in and drives through. Reem sprawls well.
Ruas misses with a body shot.
Reem slips under a jab.
Reem lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Ruas shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Reem as he avoids it easily.
Reem looks to land a left hand but Ruas moved out of range nicely.

and Reem connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Ruas fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Reem throws a series of punches but Ruas moves out of range.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Reem, as that shot connected.
Reem swings for the body but Ruas moves out of range.
Ruas takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Ruas throws a right hand that misses
and Reem counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Ruas tries for a takedown but Reem circles away easily
and Reem counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Reem connects with a body shot.
Ruas avoids a punch combination nicely.
Reem fails with an attempt to clinch.
Ruas shoots for a takedown but Reem saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Reem wants to clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
A cross from Ruas lands.
Umberto Reem is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Reem misses the jab.
Ruas half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Umberto Reem seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Ruas swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Reem.

Reem moves into the clinch.
Reem displaying some good clinch control by pressing Ruas up against the cage.

Reem's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Ruas takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
Ruas shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Reem pinned against the cage. Reem gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Reem feints and then cracks Ruas's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Ruas down.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Reem is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Ruas.
Reem scores with a one two! Ruas had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

Ruas manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Reem on his heels. He'll look to pass Reem's guard now, I'm sure.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Ruas is looking to advance position but Reem has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Ruas keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Umberto Reem comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Reem has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Umberto Reem spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
Carlos Ruas spoke after the fight, saying 'No one likes seeing their opponent's hand raised, but that just means that they were the better man today. My team at 3Band MMA and I will break down this match and make the proper changes for my next camp.'.
