Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jimmy Sparks (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bruno Novaes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Novaes is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Racionais Mc's - Capítulo 4 Versículo 3. Bruno Novaes told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jimmy Sparks! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Bruno Novaes! The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Felipe Paraventi and Luis Engracia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Novaes misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Sparks takes a swing at Novaes's ribcage but misses. Sparks closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Sparks working away. Sparks wants to control but Novaes is keeping him busy. Novaes gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard. Novaes wants to improve his position but Sparks is controlling well.
Sparks is keen to just control but Novaes is a slippery customer. Sparks is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Novaes is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Novaes actively working from the bottom here. Sparks is nestled in close to Novaes, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Novaes tries to get to full guard but Sparks has control of the leg. Sparks stands up from half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sparks swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Novaes drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Sparks on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Sparks tries to get out of the position. Sparks controlling Novaes's posture. Novaes stands up from guard. Let's bang! Bruno Novaes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Novaes misses with a takedown attempt and Sparks counters with a two punch combo. Sparks is breathing heavily. Sparks looks to land a combination but Novaes avoids it well. Novaes throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Sparks's waist but Sparks gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Novaes off to one side. Jimmy Sparks has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Bruno Novaes. Novaes shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Sparks but Sparks pushes him off and we're back to square one. Sparks lands a nice hook to Novaes's body. Novaes takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Novaes fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Novaes tries for a takedown but Sparks sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Novaes throws a combination that misses and Novaes takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Sparks gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Sparks has clasped his hands together around Novaes's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done. Sparks decides to stand back up. Sparks steps back and let's Novaes get back to his feet. Sparks throws out a powerful jab. No joy there for Sparks, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Novaes drives through with a takedown into guard. Sparks wants to stand but Novaes is controlling the position. Novaes throws a big right hand that misses. Novaes is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Novaes trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Sparks is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Novaes is controlling him. Novaes thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Sparks looking to hit a scissor sweep but Novaes is one step ahead there. Sparks is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Novaes with a lazy takedown attempt and Sparks decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Novaes's guard. Novaes lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Sparks!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Novaes working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Sparks looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Novaes! Submission of the night perhaps?
