PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jake Tate (ranked 4724 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dominic Triggs (ranked 4669 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jake Tate!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Dominic Triggs!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Roger Salmon and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Tate shoots in and gets a takedown into Triggs's guard.
Tate throws a big right hand that misses.
Triggs working a defensive guard here.
Triggs wants to sweep but no luck.
Tate throws a strike but Triggs rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Tate throws a couple of heel strikes.
Triggs wanted to stand there but Tate had control of the position.
Triggs trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Tate wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Triggs would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Tate is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Tate winds up and cracks Triggs with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Triggs is not content to let Tate control the position.
Tate drops an elbow to the side of Triggs's head.
Triggs makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Triggs.

Triggs working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Tate doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Tate manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Tate knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Triggs on the ground.

Tate makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Tate stands up over Triggs, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Triggs is on top in guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Tate will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Tate tries to land a sweep but no joy.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Tate looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Tate bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Triggs's guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Triggs will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

Triggs is looking for a kimura but Tate is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Triggs to get the leverage.

Triggs wants to lay and pray for a moment but Tate keeps working.
Triggs wants to free his trapped foot but Tate is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Tate throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

Triggs is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Triggs wants to take a breather but Tate is having none of it.
Tate wants to improve his position but Triggs is controlling well.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Triggs throwing shots but Tate is blocking nicely.

Triggs decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

Triggs keeping moving, preventing Tate from controlling successfully.
Triggs is trying to control the position but Tate postures up.
Tate is working Triggs over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Tate stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Triggs swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Tate lands a couple of digs.
Tate scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Tate trying to control but Triggs is working from the bottom.
Triggs wants to sweep but no luck.
Tate working some strikes from top position.
Tate is stalling in the full guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Tate accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Triggs looking to control.
Tate looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Jake Tate overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Tate got a little sloppy there for a moment and Triggs has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Tate has managed to get both his arms back between Triggs's legs - danger averted.

Triggs escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Tate gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

A close second round but Dominic Triggs will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Tate manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Triggs on his heels. He'll look to pass Triggs's guard now, I'm sure.

Tate's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Triggs tries to roll over but Tate keeps him under control.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Well Tate has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
