PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Hilbert Lamotta (ranked 4221 p4p, 414 weight class) and Daniel Pawlik (ranked 3233 p4p, 343 weight class). Daniel Pawlik will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Hilbert Lamotta!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Daniel Pawlik!
The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, James Atkins and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pawlik shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Lamotta as he avoids it easily.
Lamotta drops down looking for a counter takedown but Pawlik sprawls and moves away.

Pawlik clinches.

Pawlik pulls guard successfully.
Lamotta pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Pawlik is keeping the position for now.
Lamotta seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lamotta would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Lamotta accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Pawlik gets a takedown into half guard.
Lamotta is looking for a sweep. Pawlik is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Pawlik is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Lamotta doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Pawlik.
Pawlik blocks the strikes from Lamotta.

Lamotta tries to roll over but Pawlik keeps him under control.
Lamotta is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Pawlik's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Pawlik's back!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Lamotta controlling the position well here. Pawlik rolled but Lamotta kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.
Lamotta is trying to stick to Pawlik's back but Pawlik is turning into Lamotta. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Lamotta's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Pawlik.

We've been hearing good reports from Lamotta's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
It looks like Pawlik might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Lamotta keeping moving, preventing Pawlik from controlling successfully.

Pawlik seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

A close round but Daniel Pawlik will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Pawlik doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Lamotta counters with a single leg into guard. Pawlik didn't expect that.

Pawlik has his foot on Lamotta's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Lamotta works his way back into a safe position though.
Our spies down at at London MMA Club inform us that Pawlik has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?

Lamotta got a little sloppy there for a moment and Pawlik has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Lamotta has managed to get both his arms back between Pawlik's legs - danger averted.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Lamotta thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Pawlik tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Lamotta wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Lamotta gets tackled into the cage by Pawlik. Pawlik maintains the clinch.
Still in the clinch, Pawlik scores with a nice short uppercut.

Pawlik jumps guard.
Lamotta is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Pawlik isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Lamotta stacks Pawlik on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Lamotta!
Pawlik is breathing heavily.

Lamotta goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Pawlik rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Lamotta's guard! Nice work there by Pawlik!

Lamotta leaves Pawlik with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Lamotta drops down looking for a counter takedown but Pawlik sprawls and moves away.

Pawlik working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lamotta doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lamotta manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Lamotta fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Pawlik to the ground. Lamotta is now in Pawlik's guard.
Lamotta not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Pawlik is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Lamotta defends well.

Pawlik shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Lamotta sprawls well. Lamotta wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Pawlik gets slowly back to his feet.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Pawlik is looking to clinch.

Lamotta looking to score a takedown here. Pawlik is defending well but Lamotta drives through and ends up in Pawlik's guard.
Lamotta tries to free his leg and advance position but Pawlik is retaining full guard.
Lamotta stands and throws Pawlik's legs to the side, diving into side control.
