PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Christian Kongo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Derek Cook (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Christian Kongo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Derek Cook!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Trevor Gratis and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cook throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Kongo throws a head kick but Cook moves out of range.
Kongo connects with a high kick.


It looks like Derek Cook has been cut.
Cook slips a jab and a cross from Kongo.

Cook closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Kongo actively working from the bottom here.
Kongo is trying to get back to full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kongo wants to get back to full guard but Cook has passed into side control.

It looks like Christian Kongo has been cut.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Cook controlling his opponent.
Kongo tries to lock up and control but Cook gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Cook is going olschool here, as he tries to force Kongo to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Kongo shrugs it off.

Christian Kongo's cut is getting worse.
Kongo regains half guard.
Kongo wants to improve his position but Cook is controlling well.
Cook wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kongo keeps working.

Cook winds up and cracks Kongo with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Kongo is looking to control Cook's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Kongo avoid being mounted?

Kongo keeping moving, preventing Cook from controlling successfully.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Kongo tries to close the distance and clinch up but Cook swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Kongo gets caught flat footed, as Cook shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Cook working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Kongo's head.

Cook wants to control from the top but Kongo keeps moving.
Cook is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Kongo lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Cook!
Cook tries to hold on but Kongo postures up.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Kongo looking to control but Cook is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Kongo is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Cook is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Cook is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Kongo is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Kongo shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Cook counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Kongo's guard now.
Cook postures up.

Kongo scrambles and gets back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Derek Cook dominated that round.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Cook scores with a leg kick.
Kongo misses with a head kick.
Kongo shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Kongo fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Cook misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Cook moves into the clinch.
Kongo tries to break the clinch but Cook is controlling the position.
Cook jumps guard but Kongo stands there with Cook around his waist. Cook gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kongo breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Kongo.
I wouldn't like to be where Cook is right now.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

An elbow from Kongo crashes against the mat.
Cook tries to buck Kongo off but Kongo is having none of it.

Kongo is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Cook is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Cook tries to bench press Kongo off him but Kongo keeps the position.
Cook gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Cook trying to control from the bottom.
Ground and pound from Kongo.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cook is refusing to be controlled, as Kongo sits in half guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Kongo moves into full mount! Cook won't be happy about that!
Kongo will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Kongo trying to control but Cook is having none of it.

Kongo stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.
Kongo throws a nice head kick!

Kongo gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Kongo looking for a guillotine here but Cook defends easily.

Kongo tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Kongo not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Kongo will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Cook stays in close to Kongo's body and controls the position.
Cook postures up.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Cook looking to sit in guard and control but Kongo gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Kongo pushes down on Cook's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Kongo sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Cook defending well though.
Kongo tries to stand and escape but Cook is controlling the position.
Cook is concentrating on defense, preventing Kongo from advancing position.
Cook blocking the ground and pound attempt from Kongo.
Cook is in trouble now - Kongo has advanced to mount!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Cook tries to clinch up but Kongo circles away and keeps his distance.

and Cook holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Cook has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Kongo uses from the top position.

Kongo drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Cook manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Kongo has Cook in his guard.

Kongo is looking for a sweep. Cook is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Kongo on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Kongo wants to get back to his feet.

Cook throws the kick towards the body but Kongo avoids it.

Kongo wants to control the action here but instead Cook manages to pass to full mount!

Kongo is squirming around, avoiding Cook's attempts to control the action.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Cook looking to finish Kongo with some ground and pound. This is bad for Kongo!

Derek Cook comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Cook has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
