Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
13 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Leonid Martinyuk! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Samson Fortier! The judges for this bout are James Atkins, William Gold and Colin Fotheringham.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Martinyuk throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Fortier sees it coming and avoids it easily. Samson Fortier seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Martinyuk throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Fortier. Fortier throws a low kick but it's checked well by Martinyuk. Martinyuk has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Martinyuk lands with a hook. Fortier tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head. Fortier lands with an overhand left. A jab from Fortier misses. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Martinyuk takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Fortier fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Martinyuk manages to avoid it. Martinyuk appears to be looking for a big counter. Martinyuk throws a series of punches but Fortier moves out of range.
That's one minute gone in the round. Martinyuk looks to land a right hand but Fortier moved out of range. Fortier avoids a lazy jab quite easily. Martinyuk misses with a looping left. Fortier tries to land a front kick but Martinyuk steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed. Martinyuk is looking to counter with a shot to the body. A low kick from Fortier is predictable there and Fortier takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Fortier misses with a body kick. Martinyuk was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger. Fortier lands with a thumping leg kick.
Fortier pivots, looking for a leg kick but Martinyuk is out of range and Fortier settles back down. Fortier rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Martinyuk connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Fortier throws a wild body kick that Martinyuk sees coming a mile off. Martinyuk throwing a counter right hand but Fortier manages to avoid it. Martinyuk uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Fortier. Fortier scores with a jab to the head.
A jab lands there for Fortier. Martinyuk misses with a hook to the body
and Fortier counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Fortier ducks down and throws a hook to the body. Martinyuk thows a left - swing and a miss! Martinyuk takes one on the chin but seems OK.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Martinyuk throws a big shot that misses. Fortier pounces like a tiger and cracks Martinyuk with a vicious hook! Martinyuk is down but not out! Fortier follows up with more strikes forcing the ref to jump in and stop it!
