PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between James Marley (ranked 4015 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Wayne Gracie (ranked 3778 p4p, 0 weight class). Marley's entrance music is Mo Money Mo Problems. A fine choice. Gracie comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Thriller by Michael Jackson kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Marley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Wayne Gracie!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Gwen Towbar and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gracie fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Marley rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Marley takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
James Marley seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gracie uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Marley.
Marley connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Marley lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Gracie has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Gracie and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Gracie has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Gracie connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Marley's hands.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Marley tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Gracie drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Marley gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Gracie digs a right hand into Marley's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Marley's gas tank.
Gracie lands with a short head shot on the inside.
Marley pushes Gracie back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Marley lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Gracie backwards.
Gracie scores with a shoulder strike.
Gracie cracks Marley with a nice body shot.
Gracie presses Marley against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.

Gracie gets through Marley's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.

Gracie lands a good knee to the midsection. Marley won't want to take too many of those.
Marley is breathing heavily.

Marley has a couple of punches blocked by Gracie.

Marley tries to work over Gracie's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

Gracie fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Marley on the side of the head.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Gracie scores with a sloppy right hand. Marley should have avoided that one.
Marley misses with a few strikes there.

Gracie bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.

Gracie shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Gracie showed some decent athleticism there.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Gracie is looking for a kimura but Marley is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Gracie to get the leverage.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Marley throws a right hand that Gracie ducks under and follows up with a left that Gracie also avoids with ease.

Gracie doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Marley enables Gracie to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Marley manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Gracie has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

John Wayne Gracie showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Marley went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Marley throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Gracie sees it coming and avoids it easily.

Gracie shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Gracie was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Marley tries to bench press Gracie off him but Gracie keeps the position.
Marley is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Gracie's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

Gracie is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

John Wayne Gracie comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Gracie has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
