Hess misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Wallace throwing a counter right hand but Hess manages to avoid it. Good leg kick by Wallace there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Hess moves out of range of the strikes. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Wallace feints and then cracks Hess's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Hess down. Hess on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Wallace. Wallace obviously looking to wear him down.
We've been told by Wallace's head coaches at Gym Beam that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight. Wallace scores with a jab. Hess changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.#TD# Hess decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Hess is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Jackson! Jackson felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.#SUB# Hess goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Jackson turns into him and now he's in Hess's guard.
Hess seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Hess ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. A nice inside leg kick there by Tomson. That's going to slow Hess down. Hess looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight. Hess wants to land a leg kick but Tomson is out of range. Tomson throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Hess misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Tomson has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Tomson bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Hess throws a head kick that misses. Tomson wants to counter the offense by Hess and move into the clinch position.
