We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Winnemayer wants to stand but Barns has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Barns keeping full guard, as Winnemayer tries to pass. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Barns can't keep his opponent in guard - Winnemayer advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Barns could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Barns stands up over Smith, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Barns throws a big elbow that misses. Barns with a nice head shot there. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Barns accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Smith is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Smith has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Barns has passed into side control.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Smith can do anything to dispel that myth. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Smith is looking for a sweep. Smith taking a bit of punishment here - Barns scoring with strikes. #T1# Smith tries to bench press Barns off him but Barns keeps the position.
