#R1# Smith leaves Young with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Young shoots for a double leg takedown but Smith sprawls well. He's pushed Young's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Smith scores with a nice head shot. Young moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross. Young shoots in but Smith avoids the takedown attempt easily. Stan Smith has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joe Young. Smith throws a low kick but Young avoids it. Smith tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Young was well out of range. Poor timing from Smith. Young closes this distance looking for a takedown but Smith circles away. Smith tried to counter with a leg kick but Young avoided it. A lazy left from Smith finds it's target. Young has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Smith finds it's way round the side to connect with Young's head. Young shoots in and drives through. Smith sprawls well. Young takes a jab right on the kisser.

Young shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Smith pinned against the cage. But Whole cracks Young with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd. But Whole jabs. That one connects to the head of his opponent.
Young looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? But Whole is fending him off so far but Young persists. Nope, But Whole circles away and we're back to standing. Young looks for a takedown but But Whole sprawls well. Fractured But Whole has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joe Young. But Whole works the jab nicely. We've been told by But Whole's head coaches at World Class Elite Gym (14 elites) $1000 that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight. But Whole misses with a wild combination.

The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Young's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace. The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end. #R1##TD2# Young shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Hooper throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land. Young lands a couple of digs.#CUT2# It looks like Maynard Hooper has been cut.#SU2# Young stands up and waves to Hooper to follow him. Hooper with a lazy takedown attempt #CL2# and Young counters by clinching up. Hooper has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Young avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.#TD2# Young successfully pulls guard.
#SUB2# Young had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Hooper defends it easily. Hooper will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Young holds on and takes a little breather. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Young can do anything to dispel that myth. Hooper throws a strike but Young rolls with it and manages to sweep. Young is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Gus.#CL2# Gus clinches up with Young and pushes him back against the cage.#TD# Young has hold of one of Gus's legs. Gus is fighting the takedown attempt but Young gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.#SUB2# Gus is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
#SUB# Young drops back looking for a leg! Gus is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Gus manages to kick Young off! Young jumps back into Gus's guard. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Young is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.#SU# Young decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.#TD# Young fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Fairfax to the ground. Young is now in Fairfax's guard.
