#R1# Janssen closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so. Apilas misses with a head kick.
Janssen swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target. Janssen moves out of the way of the counter high kick fromApilas. Janssen doesn't manage to clinch there - Apilas circles away.
Janssen scores with a jab to the jaw. Apilas feints and then cracks Janssen's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Janssen down. Janssen blocks the body kick.
Janssen is looking to counter the offense by Apilas and move into the clinch. Apilas misses with a straight left. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Apilas misses with a head kick.
Janssen moves out of range as Apilas throws a body kick.
#CL# Janssen fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Apilas, pushing him back against the cage.#T1# Apilas throws an elbow but it misses.
Janssen misses with some punches.
#TD# Janssen ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Janssen no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard. Janssen trying to keep a closed guard but Apilas is proving a slippery customer.
Apilas must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Janssen has a closed guard, preventing Apilas from standing up. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.#SUB# Janssen is looking to cinch up a triangle. Apilas throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Janssen's body to avoid the submission. Janssen has instead reached around Apilas's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Janssen arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.

#R1# Damballah has a takedown stuffed. Apilas throws a head kick but Damballah moves out of range.
Apilas looks to score with a jab to the body but Damballah is just out of range. Damballah lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Apilas backs up against the cage.
El Misterioso Damballah seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Nice takedown defense from Apilas. No joy for Damballah on that attempt. A head kick misses from Apilas. Damballah shoots for a double leg takedown but Apilas sprawls well. He's pushed Damballah's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for El Misterioso Damballah. That's going to take a lot out of him. Damballah throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Apilas's waist but Apilas gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Damballah off to one side. Apilas gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Damballah. Apilas plants his feet and lands a nice head kick! Damballah looks for a takedown but Apilas sprawls well.#CL# Damballah pushes Apilas up against the cage in a clinch. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Apilas taking a break, stalling in the clinch.

A nice glancing elbow lands by Apilas. #CUT2# It looks like El Misterioso Damballah has been cut. Apilas creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses. Damballah lands with a left to the head. #TD# Damballah gets a trip takedown into half guard. Apilas desperately trying to maintain half guard. Damballah takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Damballah not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Ground and pound from Damballah. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Apilas is looking for a sweep. Damballah is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Damballah missing with the ground and pound from half guard. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Apilas avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Damballah. Apilas is trying to get back to full guard.#T2# Damballah thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Apilas's head. #SUB# Apilas is defending against the submission attempts here by Damballah.

Apilas really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Damballah. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. More strikes land and the referee has jumped in to save Apilas! He was hurt real bad - good stoppage!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). El Misterioso Damballah! In his post fight interview, El Misterioso Damballah started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
