#R1##TD# Carl closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Van Der Merwe looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight! Van Der Merwe is refusing to be controlled, as Carl sits in half guard. Van Der Merwe blocking the ground and pound attempt from Carl. Carl is trying to control the action in half guard but Van Der Merwe is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Carl looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Van Der Merwe with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Carl seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Van Der Merwe does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Carl seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Carl working over Van Der Merwe with some ground and pound. Van Der Merwe looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Carl wants to control but Van Der Merwe is keeping him busy. #T1# Carl throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Van Der Merwe is staying active underneath Carl, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Van Der Merwe on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. Van Der Merwe has hold of Carl's hands but Carl slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Carl is controlling the pace.
#T2# The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Carl thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Van Der Merwe's head. #REF3# The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.#TD2# Van Der Merwe throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Carl was covering up waiting for the punch and Van Der Merwe finishes the takedown easily into guard. Carl is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Van Der Merwe is controlling him. #T3##SUB2# Van Der Merwe is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Carl is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Carl has escaped and now he's on top! #REVR# Carl wants to control from the top but Van Der Merwe keeps moving. #SUB2# Van Der Merwe escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Carl gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. #T4# There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Carl cracks Van Der Merwe with a solid left hand.#SUB2# Van Der Merwe is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Carl trying to control the position from guard on top but Van Der Merwe is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
King Carl dominated that round. Carl throws a strike aimed at the side of Van Der Merwe's head but Van Der Merwe avoids it well. Carl lands a few punches from side control. Carl wants to control but Van Der Merwe is keeping him busy. Carl landing strikes. Carl moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now. Carl working the ground and pound but Van Der Merwe is defending the strikes. Carl has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Carl trying to control the position but Van Der Merwe is working away. #T2# Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Van Der Merwe is not in a great position here, taking some shots. Carl trying to control the position but Van Der Merwe is working away. Van Der Merwe tries to improve position but can't. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Carl is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Van Der Merwe can do to turn this around? Carl wants to lay and pray for a moment but Van Der Merwe keeps working. #REF3# The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.#TD# Carl throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. Carl working the body and head with strikes. This is the final round! #R3##TD# Carl shoots in and bounces Van Der Merwe off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.#ROC# Van Der Merwe is rocked! Carl scoring with punches to the head and body. Van Der Merwe is still in real trouble! Can Carl finish him? Carl arches his back and unloads with a massive left and a right! Van Der Merwe's eyes roll back into his head, he's out cold! The ref dives in to stop the fight - wow, they were hard shots!
