Quickly tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Quickly wants to get back to his feet.
Mayer lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Mayer unloading with bombs! Mayer has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Quickly is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Mayer lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Mayer has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Quickly's face.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Mayer working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Mayer keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Gomes's head. Gomes looking to hit a scissor sweep but Mayer is one step ahead there. Mayer is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gomes has a closed guard, preventing Mayer from standing up. #T1# Mayer distracts Gomes with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Mayer throws a strike but Gomes rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. #REVB# We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
