Kan is trying to defend but Smathers finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.#SUB# Smathers looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. #R1# We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight.#TD# Smathers manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Kan on his heels. He'll look to pass Kan's guard now, I'm sure.#SUB# Smathers is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Kan is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Kan has escaped and now he's on top! #REVB# Smathers controlling the position. Smathers working a defensive guard but Kan manages to pass into side control anyway.
Smathers is looking to reverse the position. Kan tries to move into full mount but can't pass Smathers's legs. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
