#R1# Tavares looks to land a body kick but Mathews moved away. A quick step to the side and Mathews tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect. Tavares fails with the takedown. Tavares with a poor takedown #CL# and Mathews counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Mathews. Mathews fails to pull guard.
#TD2# Tavares gets a trip takedown into half guard. Mathews makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Mathews. Tavares trying to control the position from guard on top but Mathews is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. #SUB# Tavares avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mathews wants to sweep but no luck. #SUB# Mathews is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. #T1# Tavares slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Tavares has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Mathews is proving hard to escape from. Tavares engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. It looks like Tavares might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. Tavares postures up and lands a big shot to Mathews's brow. Tavares is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.#SUB# Mathews has an active guard here but Tavares has managed to pass into half guard.
Mathews tries to kick Tavares off but Tavares keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. #T2# The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Tavares working over Mathews with some ground and pound. Mathews looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Tavares lands strikes from half guard. Tavares sitting and controlling from the half guard. Tavares has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Tavares is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Still in half guard, Tavares seems content to control.#SUB2# Tavares is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Mathews defends it well. Tavares stalling. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Mathews is looking to control Tavares's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Mathews avoid being mounted? Mathews wants to improve his position but Tavares is controlling well.
