#R1# Assad scores with a hook to the body. Pekkala takes a step back and tries to catch his breath. We've been hearing reports that Pekkala has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. Akhtar Assad seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Pekkala gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Assad tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Pekkala is able to avoid easily. Pekkala appears to be looking for a counter takedown. Assad jabbing away but nothing is landing. Pekkala tries to counter with a takedown but Assad is quick to defend against it. Sloppy strikes from Assad. Those never looked like landing. It looked like Pekkala wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit. Assad cracks Pekkala with a right hand to the side of the head. Assad lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Pekkala circles away quickly and effectively. Pekkala was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger. Pekkala displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Assad throws out the jab. #TD# Assad gets caught napping as Pekkala dives in and scores a takedown. Assad manages to retain guard. Assad looking to hit a scissor sweep but Pekkala is one step ahead there. Assad not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Pekkala stopping the sweep attempt from Assad.#REF3# The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. Assad misses with a jab, cross combination.
Pekkala tries to counter with a takedown but Assad is quick to defend against it.#T2# My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.#TD# Pekkala feints and as Assad raises his hands in defense, Pekkala changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Assad keeping full guard, as Pekkala tries to pass. Pekkala loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Assad is adopting a defensive guard. Let's hope that Assad has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Assad throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.

Pekkala ducks under a wild hook from Assad. Pekkala ducks right into an uppercut from Assad. Pekkala checks a leg kick. Assad scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent. Assad misses with a wild combination.
#T4# Pekkala fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Assad avoids it really well and circles away. Assad throws a big shot that misses. Pekkala is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Assad. Assad circles away from the clinch attempt.
Assad keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.#TD# Pekkala gets the takedown into side control. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Assad jabs at Pekkala's body.#TD# Pekkala shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Pekkala showed some decent athleticism there. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Assad tries to roll over but Pekkala keeps him under control.#T1# Assad keeps control of the position for the meantime. Assad tries to get to full guard but Pekkala has control of the leg. Pekkala is controlling the pace.

Assad tries to get back to half guard but can't. Pekkala avoids the attempt from Assad to control. Pekkala can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Assad is looking to escape. Usko Pekkala overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Assad gets back to half guard. Assad is positioning himself well to prevent Pekkala advancing to mount. Assad trying to control here.

#T4# There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Assad gets full guard. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Assad can do anything to dispel that myth. Pekkala scoring with punches to the head and body. Assad is pulling down on Pekkala's head. It's preventing any offense from Pekkala, at least for the moment. Pekkala is looking to pass into half guard but Assad pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Assad is in guard.#REVB# The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Assad trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Assad is looking to work some ground and pound but Pekkala has wrist control. Usko Pekkala has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Pekkala avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

#R1##TD# Perry decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.#SUB2# Pekkala actively working from the bottom here.#SUB2# Pekkala looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Perry thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Perry throwing shots but Pekkala is blocking nicely. Pekkala lands one or two decent shots to the body here. Although from his own half guard, he's not going to be causing too much damage. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Pekkala can do anything to dispel that myth. Pekkala works his way to full guard. Good work.#SUB2# Perry has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Pekkala to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Perry is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Pekkala pulls down on the head and he's put Perry to sleep! This one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Usko Pekkala! A very excited looking Usko Pekkala rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed. |

#R1# Pekkala stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Pekkala wants it to stay on the feet. Pekkala dodges the punch combination from Berachi .
Pekkala is looking to counter the offense by Berachi and move into the clinch.#TD2# Berachi shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Berachi was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Pekkala is positioning himself to get back to half guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Pekkala gets back to half guard. Berachi is thwarting Pekkala's attempts to control the position.#T1# The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Berachi lands a nice short elbow. Pekkala punching from the bottom.
Berachi not landing any meaningful shots this time. Pekkala is looking to control Berachi 's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Pekkala avoid being mounted? Pekkala tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land. Pekkala throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
#SUB2# Berachi is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Pekkala has managed to free his arm - good work. Pekkala looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio. Pekkala is trying to control but can't.
#T2# My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Berachi not doing much here.
Pekkala is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Berachi 's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Berachi 's back! The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Berachi covers up after taking a massive shot to the side of the head.
Watch the back of the head! Comes the shout from the referee towards Pekkala.
Berachi turns into Pekkala and is now in his guard.
Berachi has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Pekkala is proving hard to escape from. #SUB# Pekkala looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Berachi is defending well. Pekkala quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Berachi has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Pekkala celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.

#R1##CL2# Pekkala gets tackled into the cage by Choi. Choi maintains the clinch. Pekkala changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Choi fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Pekkala has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Choi finds it's way round the side to connect with Pekkala's head. Pekkala avoids the body shot from Choi.
Pekkala looked to counter with a high kick but didn't commit.#CL2# Choi clinches with his opponent.
Choi looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Pekkala wants to take the fight to the mat but Choi manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch. Pekkala is looking to control Choi's arms but Choi gets an underhook and turns him. Now Pekkala has his back to the cage. Pekkala has Choi pressed against the cage, preventing Choi from circling away and getting back to striking at range. Choi misses with a hook from the clinch. #T1# A frustrated look appears on Choi's face as he tries to break the clinch. Choi can't break the clinch.
Choi is trying to force a seperation but Pekkala has the dominant position. Choi wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
A head punch on the inside from Choi fails to land. Choi gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Pekkala.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Usko Pekkala. That's going to take a lot out of him. A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors. Choi throws a punch but it's blocked by Pekkala. #T2# The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Choi tries a knee to the head but he's missed.

Choi tries to circle away but Pekkala has him pinned against the cage. Choi lands on the inside with an uppercut. Pekkala is looking for a takedown. Pekkala is looking to take this one to the mat. Choi misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Pekkala is working for takedown but Choi is calmly controlling the position for now. Pekkala has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Choi after a bit of a struggle. #T3# Choi is trying to force a seperation but Pekkala has the dominant position. Choi misses with some punches.

Choi throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Pekkala blocks it with crossed arms. Choi is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage. Choi stalling in the clinch.
Choi tries to break the clinch but Pekkala is controlling the position. Pekkala drops down looking for an ankle pick but Choi pulls his leg out and moves away.
#CL2# Choi rushes Pekkala and presses him up against the cage. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The bell goes and we're back to the action.#R2# Choi misses with a looping left.#TD# Pekkala fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Choi to the ground. Pekkala is now in Choi's guard. Pekkala won't allow Choi to get back to his feet. Choi avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Pekkala pushing down on Choi's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. #SUB# Pekkala looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Choi manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up. Pekkala wants to take his opponent's back but he's not managed it. #SUB# Pekkala swings around for an armbar and he's got it! Wow, that came out of nowhere! What a finish!

Usko Pekkala decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way. |
