Hayes darts in and out, connecting with a jab. Hayes misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Smiff.
Smiff rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Hayes connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Hayes ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Despite the aggression on Hayes's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter. Shontavius Smiff seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Smiff throws a big shot that misses. Smiff wants to clinch but Hayes slips to the side and Hayes counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt. Hayes lands a right hook to the body.

Smiff throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Hayes is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Smiff with a body shot. No luck with that takedown attempt from Smiff. Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world. Hayes misses with a wild body shot. #T2# A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Hayes throws a poor cross that misses
#TD# and Smiff counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Hayes! The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Smiff in side control, just content to control the action for now. Hayes really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Smiff. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Hayes is trying to control Smiff's posture but Smiff avoids it. Hayes is trying to work for a sweep but Smiff has mounted him! Smiff lands a nice shot to the head. Smiff landing strikes from the mount and Hayes is in trouble! #T3# Hayes tries to reverse the position but Smiff maintains control. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Hayes manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Smiff has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Smiff avoids the attempt from Hayes to control. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Hayes can do anything to dispel that myth. Hayes takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position. Hayes is working to get back to half guard.

and Hayes counters with a nice uppercut. Smiff closes the distance looking to clinch and Hayes counters with a two punch combo. #T2# Smiff throws out a token jab with nothing on it. A little jabbing left from Hayes on the counter but it doesn't find it's target. Smiff is looking to score with low kicks. Hayes postures up and lands a big shot to Neal's brow. Hayes with a nice head shot there. Hayes cracks Neal with a solid left hand. Hayes is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Hayes scoring with some ground and pound. Hayes stays in close to Neal's body and controls the position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Neal is looking to stand up but Hayes isn't so interested in that idea. Neal is looking to stand back up but Hayes counters by passing into half guard. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Hayes, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Kenard misses with a takedown attempt and Hayes counters with a straight punch to the midsection. Darius Hayes has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Johnny Kenard. Kenard rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
