#R1# Takahashi tries to bum rush Smolarek with a series of wild strikes but Smolarek uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Kenji Takahashi seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Takahashi shoots in but doesn't get the takedown enabling Smolarek to counter with a crisp jab. Smolarek connects with the punch. Takahashi is looking to score with low kicks. Takahashi is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Smolarek throws a shot from downtown. Takahashi moves away and avoids it. Smolarek thows a left - swing and a miss! Takahashi tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Takahashi has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Nice cross by Smolarek. We've been told by Smolarek's head coaches at Gold Samurai's Gym that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight. Takahashi tries to score with a low kick but Smolarek moves his leg out of the way. Smolarek connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son. Smolarek misses with an uppercut. Takahashi appeared to try and counter that last move with a leg kick. Smolarek looks to throw the jab but Takahashi is out of range. Takahashi fails miserably with a takedown attempt. This has been an exciting period of action! Smolarek bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Takahashi's head backwards.#T1# Takahashi walks straight into a right hand from Smolarek - that's dropped him! Smolarek jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Takahashi from any more punishment! Takahashi complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.

and Takahashi takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Takahashi takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor. Takahashi's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Tucker connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Takahashi scrambles back to his feet. Takahashi lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Tucker circles away quickly and effectively.#CL2# Takahashi clinches. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Takahashi has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Takahashi ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Blackwater moves away. Takahashi moves out of range of the strikes. Takahashi's jab looks to have found its range, popping Blackwater under the eye. Blackwater uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Takahashi. Takahashi thuds his shin into the meat of Blackwater's side. Takahashi slips a jab and a cross from Blackwater.

Blackwater comes rushing in but Takahashi regains his composure and manages to keep Blackwater in guard.

Takahashi is still on wobbly legs! Can Blackwater finish him? Takahashi circles to his right, straight into a beautiful hook by Blackwater. Spooner loads up on a big right hand but Takahashi slips the punch. Takahashi with the counter takedown but Spooner avoids it easily. Spooner loads up on a big right hand but Takahashi slips the punch. Spooner throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Spooner cracks Takahashi with an open hand slap. Takahashi misses with a left hand and Spooner counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. #TD2# Takahashi drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Takahashi stands up over Spooner, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Takahashi chips away with some ground and pound. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Hammerfist, elbow! yells Takahashi's corner. There ya go! There ya go! Takahashi prevents Spooner from getting back to his feet. Spooner can't keep his opponent in guard - Takahashi advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Takahashi takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Takahashi looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Spooner with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Takahashi lands a nice short elbow. Spooner looks like he's trying to stand up.

Still in the clinch, Takahashi scores with a nice short uppercut. Takahashi tries to pull guard but Welp holds him up against the cage and eventually Takahashi drops back down to his feet.
