Mathis has been working on his boxing with his coaches at The Purpose Martial Arts Academy in the buildup to the fight.#TD2# Calvin closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Mathis to the mat! Mathis manages to get full guard. Calvin lands a couple of digs. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Calvin throwing strikes from guard but Mathis blocks nicely. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Calvin's corner. There ya go! There ya go! Calvin postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Calvin lands a couple of decent looking shots. #TD# Mathis turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Mathis manages to end up in side control. Vincent tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Mathis wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mathis remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. Mathis is looking to stand up but Tung won't let him. Mathis has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mathis controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Mathis seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Tung for as long as he can get away with. Mathis knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Tung on the ground.
