He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Cruz chips away with some ground and pound. Cruz in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. O Conner wants to sweep but no luck. O Conner has his hands on Cruz's head, controlling the position. Cruz throws an elbow that misses. O Conner uses the momentum to reverse the position. Cardio looks to score with a jab to the body but O Conner is just out of range. O Conner misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Cardio slips a jab and a cross from O Conner.
A little feinted left hand from Cardio on the counter but he doesn't commit to it. Cardio catches O Conner with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong! Cardio throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Cardio takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness. Cardio tries to bum rush O Conner with a series of wild strikes but O Conner uses good footwork to avoid the assault. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Cardio misses with a wild combination.

Calland follows through with a counter body kick but it doesn't land. We've been told by O Conner's head coaches at California Top Team that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight. Calland fakes a jab and then connects with a hook. O Conner doesn't succeed with the takedown and Calland counters with a body kick that stops O Conner in his tracks momentarily. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brian O Conner. That's going to take a lot out of him.#TD# Calland gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows O Conner to score an easy takedown into full guard.
