Lamotta throws a lazy uppercut
and Tate counters with a lovely straight right hand! Tate has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Vancouver Island Fight Club in the buildup to the fight. Lamotta rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
enabling Tate to counter with a crisp jab. #T1##TD# Lamotta gets caught napping as Tate dives in and scores a takedown. Lamotta manages to retain guard. Tate slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Lamotta throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Lamotta has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.#T2# Lamotta misses with a shot to the body and Tate counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Tate accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Tate has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout. Gilmore misses with a straight right. Despite the aggression on Tate's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter. Gilmore swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Tate. Gilmore thuds his right hand into Tate's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters. Gilmore cracks a nice hook into Tate's ribs. Gilmore with a jab. Gilmore throws a shot to the body.
A jab from Gilmore does it's job there. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Gilmore lands a lovely overhand right. Tate looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight! Tate is looking to clinch but Jones is avoiding it.

Montegriffo throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Tate takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards. Tate looks winded! Tate bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Montegriffo fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

The referee will not allow him to do that for long. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. It looks like Tate might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance...
