Living mostly in isolation his entire life on Canna, Gilmat honed his skills with daily drills from a small library of martial arts books left by John Campbell. Having only left the island briefly for a short trip to the mainland, he was involved in an altercation with another person. Gilmat was unaware that the man was an MMA figher. After seeing underground video of the fight, Cian Coggins made the trip to the isolated island and convinced Gilmat to come to Hawaii and begin an MMA career.
