Born Jeff Timmons, Sherman changed his name after he studied civil war at Upper Iowa University. There he wrestled becoming the Division II national wrestling champion. He went on to the summer Olympics to win a silver medal for the USA. During this time he also began his studies in Brazilian Jiu jitsu where he is a purple belt under Chris David at Des Moines jiu jitsu.
