Hailing from 8 Mile Road, Steve had to deal with violence from a young age. Inspired by Royce Gracie, Steve learned some basic techniques of BJJ and was hooked. He worked multiple jobs at once to support his BJJ habit, along with competing in high school wrestling. Smith got a scholarship at a small school for wrestling, but set aside a career as an accountant to follow his dream of becoming a pro MMA fighter.
