Our coaches actually have the skills to train what they train, and we're one of only a few public gyms in MMAT that can say that. Elite in one thing and Useless or very low in all others usually is not good enough, and some don't even have the right main discipline. We've actually read the file on who needs what!

Don't go to a gym, like most, whose coaches do not have the secondary skills to train properly! Or sometimes the primary skills.

Look at this from the gym guide for owners about needed skills:

"Defensive grappling. Coach needs BJJ and Wrestling (secondary)."

So the coaches we have teaching Defensive Grappling have Elite BJJ and decent Wrestling. For guys who aren't already that good at Defensive Grappling, they could still benefit from, say, Exceptional BJJ and not that much Wrestling. But lots and lots of gyms have people teaching Defensive Grappling who are only skilled in Wrestling, "Useless" in BJJ. Fighters training with them will gain nearly nothing!

Look at this:

"Clinchwork. Coach needs Muay Thai, Wrestling and Boxing (secondary)."

I see some Clinchwork coaches that have only Boxing. Some have ONLY Muay Thai, which at least they have the #1 skill for it, but that's still pretty weak (they need at least some Wrestling too), though it seems more get Clinchwork close than Defensive Grappling. Etc.

That was why I had to make my own gym, because either the guide is completely wrong or there are many "elite" gyms that have some coaches that don't train worth anything. I see Clinchwork coaches specializing in Boxing or D-Grap coaches without much BJJ (the most common examples but there are many more) and it really irritates me.

Base sparring sessions (you can make others also, of course0:

Muay Thai: Mon AM / secondary Tue AM
Wrestling: Tue PM / secondary Fri PM
BJJ: Wed PM / secondary Sat AM
Boxing: Fri AM / secondary Thu AM

NOTE: I noticed that there are sessions when a fighter is sparring alone. You don't gain from that.

You want to spar when at least one other fighter is sparring. You can't spar with yourself! Training sessions with a coach are the opposite, in that the fewer fighters the better, so one on one with a coach is good.

There's a big drop off from 4 in a coaching session. The 2nd and 3rd don't hurt that much; the 4th hurts more. We have enough coaches there should be no need for 4 in a session. Let's try not to be the 4th fighter into a coaching session, so we all can benefit significantly from them. So PLEASE DO NOT BE THE 4TH INTO A COACHING SESSION. Sparring, the more the merrier. Train something else if there are already 3 in the session.
