The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Messervey wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now. Messervey looking for a sweep. Not yet Messervey, not yet. Williams passes Messervey's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Ground and pound from Williams. Messervey has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Williams is working away from the top position though. Messervey might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Messervey is looking for a sweep. Williams is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Still in half guard, Williams seems content to control.#SUB2# Williams wants to work for an arm triangle but Messervey is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Fontes manages to get back to half guard. Yoshida is keen to just control but Fontes is a slippery customer. Fontes wants to get back to full guard. Fontes is staying active underneath Yoshida, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Yoshida really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Fontes. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.#SUB2# Yoshida is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Fontes is just riding it out for now. Yoshida eventually gives up the hold. Fontes tries to get to full guard but Yoshida has control of the leg. Yoshida wants to stand up but Fontes is controlling the position.

#R1# Herb shoots and misses and Mies counters with a stiff right hand. Mies scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business. Mies connects with a right hand. Herb shakes it off. Mies definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.#CL# Herb gets tackled into the cage by Mies. Mies maintains the clinch. Mies lands a hook to the side of the head. Herb is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Mies is defending well. Mies working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely. Herb takes a shot to the head. Mies is defending well against a takedown attempt. Ihme Mies has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dean Herb. Mies softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage. A nice left hand lands by Mies.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Herb is looking to take this one to the mat. Herb goes for a takedown in the clinch but Mies prevents it.

Freeman's coach down at Canucks Combat Club was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Freeman's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight. Mikaelson shoots in but no luck this time. Messervey fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Mikaelson has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage. Messervey avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Mikaelson is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Mikaelson. As Mikaelson tries to get set, Messervey tries to push him back and clinch up but Mikaelson manages to avoid the attempt. Messervey tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Mikaelson was well out of range. Poor timing from Messervey. Messervey avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jack Messervey. Well Messervey has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... #R1##TD# A momentary lapse in concentration from Perez enables Riak to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Perez manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Riak pushing down on Perez's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Riak slows the pace down in half guard. #SUB# Riak wants to work for an arm triangle but Perez is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
#SUB# Riak is looking for a kimura but Perez is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Riak to get the leverage. Riak passes to side control. Riak advances to full mount.
