Brand new MMA organization in London, Just Fights, partnered with new sponsor Squirrel Sportswear, has held their very first event in The Micro Arena in London, 313 people attended. Their Grand Opening, as the event was dubbed, came off as very successful with two of our three fights on the evening wound up with finishes!
The first fight of the evening was a 155 lbs contest between Luke Hickman, a very powerful but very green Muay Thai specialist from Manchester. Standing across from him is Young Bob "Very" Merry. An equally powerful and technically sound Boxer, both of these men made their professional debuts on the card.
Round 1 began and it wasn't long before Hickman got caught with a massive shot that had him reeling but after a few minutes was able to survive and start holding his own. The next few minutes were spent on the ground game, with Hickman able to jump guard on Merry and the two tussle before Hickman manages a rather slick scissor sweep before he seemed to have his fill of the ground game, standing up out of Merry's guard and stepping away. The rest of the round was spent watching Hickman avoid Merry's strongest shots and hitting him with counters. Hickman kept changing it up with an oft timed takedown, but it was mostly to keep Merry guessing. Once Merry started slowing, Hickman picked up his pace, even slamming a few kicks home on the Muay Thai specialist. Round Winner: Hickman
Round 2 was strife with grappling, with Hickman even going for a guillotine a minute into the round and the submission attack continued until the last second when the referee stood them both up. Round Winner: Hickman
The third round was more striking, but the fight had tipped in Hickman's favor at this point. They got a stand up halfway through the round and Hickman started picking Merry apart. Hickman pulled guard and the two stayed on the ground until the last second with Merry dropped him again, just like the start of round 1! The end of the fight saved Hickman and that alone wasn't enough for the win.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3 rounds of action, we go to the scorecards for a decision.
Judge Steven Brown scores the fight 29:28
Judge William Gold scores the fight 29:28
Judge James Atkins scores the fight 29:28
In favor of your winner, by unanimous decision... Luke Hickman!
The second fight of the evening, our only Heavyweight bout on the card, provided plenty of FIREWORKS. Ed "Whirly" Swirly vs Luc Entienne! Another Boxer vs Muay Thai fight, with the except being it's the big boys. That means somebody is getting knocked out and boy did they deliver. The moment the fight started, Entienne was in trouble. Swirly missed with a body shot and followed it up by dropping Luc to the mat with a right hand that left him cut as well. Swirly waved him back to his feet casually and once Entienne was back up and circling, Ed "Whirly" Swirly send him tumbling down for good with a massive left hook that left Luc Entienne faced down on the mat and Ed Swirly standing over top of him, proud of his work!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:11 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Ed "Whirly" Swirly!
The Main Event of the night between Jimmy Ray Watcher and Gerry Watched didn't last long either but it was a masterclass display on Watcher's part. Early takedown in Round 1 led to Jimmy Ray Watcher going on the attack with some quick ground and pound followed by two submission attempts. The first attempt, Gerry Watched was able to fend on a Kimura by keeping his base secure. That, however, didn't last long. Watcher adjusted himself just enough to where he could isolate an arm properly and before long was forcing Gerry Watched to furiously tap out!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:42 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Jimmy Ray Watcher!
Three fights, two finishing, and a couple of new potential main eventers, Just Fights: Grand Opening wound up a success and the organization plans to ride on the momentum to October 2nd, where their second event; Just Fights Bantamweight Brawl, will take place in the Micro Arena in London! Have a GRAND NIGHT!
