SPFT 105

Event Preview: SPFT 105: Stoppers vs. Da Man
Steel Penn Fighting Temple
2013-04-20, Los Angeles, University Park
Author:

As SPFT rolls into Los Angeles this week for SPFT 105, this Boston based writer would like to take a moment aside to recognize the unfortunate events that have taken place in Boston this week. While I am aware the situation is doubtfully over, I would also like to take a moment to praise the work of Law Enforcement. Now on to something a little more fun, fighting. This week’s party includes a Welterweight title fight, and two fights featuring members of the SPFT Hall of Fame. Considering this is SPFT’s first foray into Los Angeles since the beginning of January, we can expect a packed crowd at University Park.

After Juanito Sandoval missed his fight against Bang McGee at SPFT 100!, Taco Grande stepped up and took on McGee; subsequently losing via knockout. Now the two will face off in the first match of SPFT 105. This will be Sandoval’s first fight for SPFT, but the elite boxer presents a lot of promise leading into the fight. Grande will simply be looking to improve upon his pitiful performance at SPFT 102 when he made his premiere and was completely dominated by Bang McGee until succumbing to knockout in the second round.

After nearly breaking the leg of his rival, Mahandry Andriamboavnjy, in his last fight, the rubber match between those two fighters, Gabriel Kiptanui returns to fight in his lucky 13th fight for SPFT. The 30 year old Finn fighter has been nothing but exciting in his previous 12 fights, securing three Fight of the Night awards and one Submission of the Night award, for a ni

Contention 1: The Beginning Review

Ozzie: It's come, it's gone, Contention 1: The Beginning. Ozzie Bravo here with you to review the first event for the new, the up and coming MMA organization Contention. Joining me once again, Harry Parkinson the Fifth also known as HPV. Harry?

HPV: Ozzie, what just happened? WHAT JUST HAPPENED? I'm not entirely sure what just happened as yesterday was 4/20, and, well, you know. A little memory loss for me! Luckily I caught the event on tape this morning and was able to rewatch what went down.

Ozzie: A lot went down HPV. We saw a brief glimpse of the fighters that may be the future of the company. Scores were settled. Some scores weren't settled. You know that the matchmaking is even when the first event has TWO draws!

HPV: These fighters gave their all and showed a lot of heart. A couple of draws means we'll definitely see some fi

TTFC: Reilly vs. Chavez Review

Editorial by Eric Berry

 TTFC: Reilly vs. Chavez review

TTFC: Reilly vs. Chavez is in the books. In a very exciting card, we saw Giorgio Valentino defend his title after submitting Manuel "Pac-Man" Paquiao by way of strikes. In the co-main event Kris Marsh and "Orange" Julius Peppers stole the show, going a grueling 3 rounds ending in a unanimous decision in Kris Marsh's favor. In the main event, "The Comeback Kid" never really cameback falling to Ignatius Reilly  after a beautiful head kick followed by seve

BFT 197 Atsushi vs Vimes Review

Light Heavyweight - Former champ Shananigan Lurendrejer knocked out "The Namibian Nightmare" Mukassa Jones with strikes at 3:49 in round 2.

The fight started out and both men were trying to end things early. Neither men had success at the distance, so Jones took the initiative and moved to the clinch. But Lurendrejer had thrown a good couple shots to set up a takedown. And from there Lurendrejer got to work. He was throwing shots at will and worked him down until the end of the round. The second round started, and Lurendrejer took things back down to the mat. From there he landed the ground and pound for a while, and Jones seemingly had no responce for the shots. It just kept going on like this until the ref jumped in.

What's next for the former champ? I think it's a little soon for a rematch against the champ MacMilla, although I could be wrong. But a second go-around with Titus "TKO" or Antoine "A-Train". For some new blood, Trinidad Suarez wouldn't be bad.

Heavyweight - "The Freak" Brock Lesnar submits "Demolition Man" Alistar Overeem with an arm triangle at 39 seconds in the first round.

Don't blink. Overeem tried to clinch, but Lesnar used the momentum to get the takedow

Battle Royale Fighting Championship {190k+}

The Underground, Tokyo 1000 seat arena will play host for Battle Royale Fighting Championship for the third consecutive time, as things get heated between the twenty warriors involved as they light them up on April 20th, 2013 for “BRFC8: 420 Sssmokin’!!!”

Main Event: “The Machine” Matthew Connor (5-0-0) vs Hugo Stiglitz (4-1-0) – 170lbs welterweight title

Welterweight champion, Matthew Connor will be defending his title for the second time as he takes on slick submission artist, Hugo Stiglitz. The two men involved in the main event had already engaged in a bit of verbal sparring even before they had set foot in the cage, as they both managed to have a jab at one another in their respective interviews. In a rather incoherent interview with the German star, Stiglitz may possibly be trying to get under Connor’s skin, as he exclaims how much he respects the American yet had rather crude words to describe him as a fighter and his “overrated” kickboxing… The talented Muay Thai expert, “The Machine” Connor states in his own interview how he does recognise his opponent’s ability on the ground but is confident that the fight won’t be going there nor will it go the distance. Having demonstrated in his most recent victory over Illias Stefano, the only man to have defeated Stiglitz, Connor certainly has demonstrated what a legitimate threat he is to anyone that steps inside the cage with him. Stiglitz certainly has proven his worth as a true contender as he has now strung three victories in a row, most recently having made quick work of one time contender Sentrell Lee at “BRFC5: No Man’s Fo

Featherweight Fight

#20 Jose Aldo Jr (4-2, 1-1 NGF) v #3 Diego Brandao (2-1 NGF)

I was very perplexed by the fight, it was like the two of them switched bodies before the fight started.  Jose Aldo Jr. has been a stand up fighter, he throws many combinations and kicks, in this fight, he didn’t.  Diego Brandao hasn’t done much standing up, but in this one he fired off 21 punches.  Aldo Jr. game plan was very strange, he was the one looking to clinch and he was the one that took this fight to the mat, a strength area for Brandao.  Aldo Jr. showed he is not as skilled on the ground, as he left himself in a sloppy position and Brandao locked up the SOTN triangle armbar at 3:55 of the 1st round.
Lightweight Fight

#20 Ryan King (8-6, 2-5 NGF) v #17 Ryuken Yanagi (6-5, 1-0 NGF)

This was the 2nd fight in a row that just didn’t offer much in way of excitement.  Ryan King opened up Ryuken Yanagi with a ha
