Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Magnus Gunnarsson (ranked 4228 p4p, 2128 weight class) and Marlon John (ranked 505 p4p, 276 weight class). Marlon John told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Magnus Gunnarsson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Marlon John!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Alan Glass and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
John keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Good leg kick by Gunnarsson.
Gunnarsson has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
A big left from John misses.
Gunnarsson is looking to counter the offense by John and move into the clinch.

John tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Gunnarsson looks to land a left hand but John moved out of range nicely.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
John is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Gunnarsson is defending well.
John is trying to drag Gunnarsson to the mat but Gunnarsson just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

John ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. John no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Gunnarsson thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Gunnarsson tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Gunnarsson has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

It seemed like John was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

John moves forwards but Gunnarsson connects with a nice, crisp jab.
John is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Gunnarsson.

Gunnarsson stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.

Gunnarsson shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Gunnarsson was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
John tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Gunnarsson wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

John felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Well Gunnarsson has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
