PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tom Boaler (ranked 1359 p4p, 33 weight class) and Tiago Da Costa (ranked 1454 p4p, 62 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Tom Boaler!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Tiago Da Costa!
The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Ivan Kurochkin and Illya Tyunina.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Boaler shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Da Costa manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Boaler is stalling in the full guard.

Da Costa working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Boaler doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Boaler manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Da Costa is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Boaler is aware though and is defending well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Boaler tries to free his leg and advance position but Da Costa is retaining full guard.

Boaler might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Boaler got a little sloppy there for a moment and Da Costa has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Boaler has managed to get both his arms back between Da Costa's legs - danger averted.

Boaler stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Da Costa swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Da Costa has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Boaler can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Da Costa throws his legs up looking for a submission but Boaler uses it to pass to side control.
Da Costa tries to bench press Boaler off him but Boaler keeps the position.
Boaler tries to advance to mount but Da Costa denies him.

Boaler is trying to get an arm triangle but Da Costa is defending well.
Boaler works to advance to full mount. Da Costa defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.

Da Costa felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Boaler is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Da Costa to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Da Costa shrugs it off.

Boaler feints and as Da Costa raises his hands in defense, Boaler changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
