Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Gilbervan Soares! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Randy Randleman! The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Luis Engracia and Alexandre Firmino.

Randleman throws a body punch but Soares moves out of range. Randleman ducks under a wild hook from Soares. We've been hearing reports that Soares has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. Soares connects with a slap. and Randleman counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Soares thinking.
That's one minute gone in the round. Randleman throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Soares stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly. Randleman scoring well with a low kick there.
Soares feints and as Randleman raises his hands in defense, Soares changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Randleman is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Soares distracts Randleman with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Soares with a flurry of punches that miss. Randleman told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet. Soares working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Randleman avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Soares landing with the ground and pound. Soares trying to control but Randleman is working from the bottom.

Soares lands a couple of digs. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Soares loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Soares slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Soares lands a couple of decent looking shots.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Soares stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Randleman swivels though and keeps the full guard. Soares stopping the sweep attempt from Randleman. Randleman working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Soares. Soares landing some decent shots from guard. Soares trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Randleman not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Soares throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Randleman walks into a stiff left hand from Soares. Soares throws a combination that misses and Randleman connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. A combination from Randleman does no damage. Randleman drops his hands momentarily and Soares takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head. Randleman ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Good standup being displayed there by Soares as he connects with a hook. Soares misses with a body punch
and Randleman cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Soares throws a hook but Randleman blocks it. Soares is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all. Soares throws an overhand right that lands on Randleman's shoulder, as Randleman tries to avoid the shot. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Gilbervan Soares dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Soares scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Soares has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Soares working Randleman over with strikes. Randleman tries to get to full guard but Soares has control of the leg. Soares looks to land a strike but Randleman avoids it nicely and regains full guard. Soares working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Soares tries to free his leg and advance position but Randleman is retaining full guard. Soares wants to control from the top but Randleman keeps moving. Gilbervan Soares overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Soares is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Randleman is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Randleman looking to control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Soares wants to control from the top but Randleman keeps moving. Soares postures up and lands a big shot to Randleman's brow. Soares passes into half guard. Randleman avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Soares. Soares is thwarting Randleman's attempts to control the position. Soares throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Randleman keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Soares is trying to control the action in half guard but Randleman is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Randleman keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Randleman controlling the position well.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. Soares is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Randleman can do to turn this around? Soares jabs. That one connects to the head of his opponent.
Randleman connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Soares momentarily.
Soares tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Randleman was well out of range. Poor timing from Soares. Randleman jabs Soares right on the nose. Soares blinks but takes it well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Soares gets caught by a brutal right hook which buckles his knees! Soares tries to backpedal with his spaghettilegs but Randleman is headhunting and goes for the kill. A jab and a right hook connect and Soares buckles badly as his eyes roll back. The referee steps in and saves Soares!! Soares is complaining but he was clearly out on his feet. Randleman throws his mouthpiece into the crowd. Mmmm spit-tastic.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:06 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Randy Randleman! Randy Randleman is the new light heavyweight champion! In his post fight interview, Randy Randleman started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
