PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Miguel Cotto (ranked 14923 p4p, 1073 weight class) and Monte Zuma (ranked 573 p4p, 17 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 41 - 26 - 2, fighting out of Amsterdam, Miguel Cotto!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 37 - 23 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Monte Zuma!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Eliza Hachem and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Zuma shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Cotto defends it nicely.
Cotto throws a half hearted mid kick.
Zuma looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Cotto stuffs the takedown attempt from Zuma. Zuma gets slowly back to his feet.
Cotto attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.

Zuma closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Cotto to the mat! Cotto manages to get full guard.
Cotto knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Zuma on the ground.
Zuma's corner is telling him to maintain position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Cotto throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Zuma is working for a submission of some sort.

Zuma wants to free his trapped foot but Cotto is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Zuma perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Zuma.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Zuma's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Zuma.
Zuma fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Zuma changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Cotto tries to avoid it but Zuma manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Cotto to the ground. Cotto escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Monte Zuma dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Zuma shoots for a takedown but Cotto saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Zuma closes the distance and clinches up with Cotto, looking for a takedown. Zuma pushes Cotto against the cage but Cotto circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

and Cotto counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Cotto throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Zuma is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Cotto knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
A lull in the action here.

Yet more stalling tactics from Zuma.

Zuma tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Zuma tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Cotto defends well and Zuma ends up having to push Cotto into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

A solid leg kick lands there for Cotto.
