PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Etienne Gueguen (ranked 1175 p4p, 1255 weight class) and Joe Tidd (ranked 137 p4p, 144 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Etienne Gueguen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Joe Tidd!
The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, Columbo Gatti and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Tidd shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Gueguen napping and manages to drive through into side control!
You can see the frustration on Gueguen's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Gueguen is looking to reverse the position.
Tidd working away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gueguen tries to improve position but can't.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Tidd working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Gueguen can't do much from the bottom here.

Tidd working the ground and pound but Gueguen is defending the strikes.
Gueguen is looking to reverse the position.
Gueguen is trying to control Tidd's posture but Tidd avoids it.
Tidd lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Gueguen down.
Gueguen tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Tidd wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Tidd is chipping away with strikes.
Gueguen avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Tidd.
Gueguen is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Gueguen has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Tidd is working away from the top position though.

Tidd working the head and body with strikes.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Tidd lands a nice short elbow.
Gueguen is trying to get back to full guard.
Tidd scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Tidd prevents Gueguen from improving his position.
Tidd missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Tidd looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Gueguen keeps control of the position for the meantime.

Gueguen has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Tidd is working away from the top position though.
The fighters are battling for position here. Gueguen manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Gueguen escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Tidd gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Gueguen seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
Tidd working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Gueguen's head.
Gueguen will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Tidd avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Tidd lands a couple of elbows.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Gueguen is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Gueguen throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Tidd postures up.
Tidd loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Tidd pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Gueguen throws a quick counter head kick but Tidd was just out of range.
Gueguen shoots in but Tidd avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Gueguen shoots in looking for a takedown. Tidd tries to sprawl out of it but Gueguen keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Tidd manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Joe Tidd dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!

Gueguen throws an overhand right that lands on Tidd's shoulder, as Tidd tries to avoid the shot.
Tidd goes for a double leg but Gueguen avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Gueguen continues to drive forward.
Gueguen fails with a takedown attempt.

Gueguen gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Joe Tidd has got the better of the ground game so far.

Tidd got a little sloppy there for a moment and Gueguen has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Tidd has managed to get both his arms back between Gueguen's legs - danger averted.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gueguen not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Tidd accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Tidd passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Tidd blocks the strikes from Gueguen.
Gueguen taking punishment in the form of punches.
Tidd with the ground and pound but Gueguen regains half guard under the barage of strikes.
Gueguen is trying to maintain the position but Tidd is very close to passing his half guard.
Tidd is keen to just control but Gueguen is a slippery customer.
Gueguen works his way to full guard. Good work.
Gueguen is trying to control the position but Tidd postures up.
Tidd has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Tidd cracks Gueguen with a solid left hand.
Gueguen wants to sweep here but Tidd controlling him for the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Tidd lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Tidd postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Tidd is fighting to break Gueguen's control of his arms but Gueguen is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Gueguen is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Tidd working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Gueguen's head.
Gueguen is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Tidd works over Gueguen with some ground and pound from guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Gueguen not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Gueguen looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Tidd content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Tidd wants to control from the top but Gueguen keeps moving.
Tidd preventing the sweep.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Tidd avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Tidd changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Gueguen looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Gueguen is working to avoid the ground and pound but Tidd connects with a decent elbow.
Gueguen is trying to get back to half guard.
Tidd lands a nice forearm strike.

Gueguen takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Gueguen is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Tidd off and has taken his back!
Gueguen keeps control of the position as Tidd tries to break free.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Gueguen is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Tidd knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Tidd for a finish.
Tidd breaks Gueguen's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Gueguen is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Tidd is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Joe Tidd showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Tidd is defended easily by Gueguen.

Gueguen gets the takedown into side control.
Tidd being controlled for a moment.
Tidd manages to work his way to half guard, despite Gueguen's best efforts.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gueguen wants to get back to his feet.
Tidd is trying to control but can't.

Gueguen keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

Gueguen is thwarting Tidd's attempts to control the position.
Gueguen is trying to control. Tidd wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Tidd stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Tidd wants it to stay on the feet.

Tidd dives in and scores a takedown into Gueguen's guard.
Gueguen is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Tidd dives into side control.

Gueguen wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Tidd missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Tidd landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Gueguen tries to get to full guard but Tidd has control of the leg.
Gueguen keeping hold of Tidd's head, controlling as best he can.

Tidd not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Tidd throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Gueguen is looking for a sweep. Tidd is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Tidd missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Tidd not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Gueguen on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Gueguen makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Gueguen.
Tidd stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gueguen swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Tidd sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Gueguen's guard.
Gueguen is looking to control Tidd's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Gueguen avoid being mounted?
Gueguen is looking to improve his position.
Gueguen regains full guard. Nicely done.
Tidd trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Tidd chips away with some ground and pound.
Etienne Gueguen has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Joe Tidd is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Tidd lands a couple of decent looking shots.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Joe Tidd.
Well Tidd has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
