PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Seymour Hughes (ranked 1618 p4p, 1807 weight class) and Meldrick Taylor (ranked 232 p4p, 252 weight class). Hughes comes into the arena with Self blaring out of the sound system. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Meldrick Taylor was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Seymour Hughes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 9 - 1, fighting out of New York, Meldrick Taylor!
The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, Richard Clark and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hughes scores with a body shot.
Taylor digs a good hook to Hughes's body.
Hughes shoots for a double leg takedown but Taylor sprawls well. He's pushed Hughes's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Taylor takes a jab right on the kisser.
Hughes misses with a body shot.
Taylor has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
A punch lands to the side of Hughes 's head but he takes it in his stride.

Taylor tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Hughes was well out of range. Poor timing from Taylor.

Taylor throws a hook to the side of Hughes's head but Hughes sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

and Hughes counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Taylor scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Taylor fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Hughes manages to avoid it.

Taylor moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

Taylor's corner calls for a 1-2. Taylor obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Seymour Hughes. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Taylor looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

Taylor is looking to break free of the clinch but Hughes has double underhooks.
Still in the clinch, Hughes scores with a nice short uppercut.

Hughes is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Taylor can do anything to dispel that myth.

Hughes is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Taylor has managed to free his arm - good work.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Hughes slows the pace down in half guard.

Hughes throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Taylor to regain full guard.
Hughes wants to pass the guard but Taylor is keeping the position.
Taylor pulls Hughes in close to prevent any damage.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Hughes is trying to control. Taylor wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Hughes content to control rather than advance.
Taylor is looking for a sweep. Hughes is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Hughes has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Hughes there as he acknowledges the shot.
Taylor uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Hughes.
A combination from Taylor does no damage.
Hughes closes the distance and clinches up with Taylor, looking for a takedown. Hughes pushes Taylor against the cage but Taylor circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Hughes lands with a good body shot.
Taylor connects with a solid leg kick.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

It looked like Hughes wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Hughes goes for a double leg but Taylor avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Taylor continues to drive forward.

Taylor is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Hughes throws a lazy right hand but Taylor sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Hughes goes for a double leg but Taylor avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Taylor continues to drive forward.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Hughes takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hughes stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Taylor swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Taylor slaps away a takedown attempt from Hughes, before circling back to the center of the mat.
A little jabbing left from Taylor on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

Taylor connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Hughes's hands.

Hughes throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Taylor throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.

Hughes closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Hughes is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Taylor knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Seymour Hughes overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Taylor regains half guard there - taking advantage of Hughes's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.

That was a close second round but I would say that Seymour Hughes will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Hughes is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Taylor is just riding it out for now. Hughes eventually gives up the hold.
Hughes is figuring out what he wants to do next.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Hughes changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Taylor tries to avoid it but Hughes manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Taylor to the ground. Taylor escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
The fighters circling - Taylor throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Taylor throws out a loose jab but Hughes uses good head movement to avoid it.

Hughes decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Seymour Hughes showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Hughes has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
