PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Derek Erwin (ranked 404 p4p, 986 weight class) and Kobayashi Jin (ranked 59 p4p, 146 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Derek Erwin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Kobayashi Jin!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Timothy Bukovac and Percy O'Donnell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Erwin throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Erwin misses with a looping left.
Erwin scores with a leg kick.
Jin moves out of range of the body kick.
Erwin tries to land a leg kick but Jin saw it coming and moves away.
Erwin has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Randall's Top Team in the buildup to the fight.
Jin with a body punch. A glancing blow.
Jin lands with a hook. Erwin tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Jin throws a body shot but no joy.
Jin swings and misses with a hook to the body.
A telegraphed right hand from Erwin misses the target.
Jin fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Erwin manages to avoid it.
As Jin backs away, Erwin returns fire with a leg kick that just misses.
Jin has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Jin ducks under a wild hook from Erwin.
Erwin misses with a low kick as Jin jumps back.
A looping hook to the body misses from Jin. Erwin does a little dance to reset his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Erwin's corner calls for a 1-2. Erwin obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.

Jin misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Erwin.
Derek Erwin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Erwin misses with a hook. Jin ducked under it nicely.

Jin closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Erwin to the mat! Erwin manages to get full guard.

Erwin is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Jin defends well.

Jin sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Erwin's guard.

It looks like Jin might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Jin looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Erwin wants to get back to full guard.
Erwin is not content to let Jin control the position.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Jin is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Erwin trying to hold on to Jin's head to control him but Jin postures up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Jin is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Jin is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Erwin sees it coming and defends easily.

Jin is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Erwin is looking for a sweep. Jin is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Erwin pushes Jin off looking to stand but Jin dives back in and keeps control.
The fighters are battling for position here. Erwin manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Jin is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Erwin has managed to free his arm - good work.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Kobayashi Jin dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Jin throws a leg kick but Erwin checks it.
An attempted straight right counter from Erwin misses the target.
Erwin cracks Jin with a right hand to the side of the head.
Erwin takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
Erwin tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Erwin throws a right and a left that Jin avoids nicely.
Jin connects with a right hand. Erwin shakes it off.
Jin throws a hook but Erwin avoids it easily.
Jin checks a leg kick.
Erwin looks to score with a jab to the body but Jin is just out of range.
Erwin looks to land a right hand but Jin moved out of range.
Erwin doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Jin misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Erwin.

Jin shoots for a double leg takedown but Erwin sprawls well. He's pushed Jin's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Erwin misses with a straight right.
Jin jabbing away but nothing is landing.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Jin uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Erwin.
Erwin stuns Jin with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.

Nice straight punches there by Erwin. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Erwin.
Jin fails with the takedown.
Erwin scores with a jab. Jin acknowledges it with a nod of the head.

Jin drops back looking for a leg! Erwin is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Erwin manages to kick Jin off! Jin jumps back into Erwin's guard.

Erwin had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Jin defends it easily.

Erwin escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Jin gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Erwin dips to his left and cracks Jin with an uppercut!

Jin on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Erwin throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Jin throws a big shot that misses.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

As Jin backs away, Erwin returns fire with a leg kick that just misses.
Erwin ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Erwin tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Jin misses the jab.
Jin jabs Erwin to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Jin throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Erwin misses with a low kick.
Erwin throws a nice looking combination but Jin bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Erwin throws a series of punches but Jin avoids them all with ease.
Jin avoids the body shot from Erwin.
Derek Erwin is winning the standup battle so far.
Jin swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

Jin shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Jin showed some decent athleticism there.

Erwin manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Jin keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Erwin successfully pulls guard.
Erwin has Jin pulled in close to control his posture.
Jin is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Jin slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Jin wants to control but Erwin is keeping him busy.
Erwin is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Jin is looking to advance position but Erwin won't allow it.
Jin thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Erwin's head.

Jin is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Erwin doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Jin.

Erwin is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Jin looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Jin wants to control the pace but Erwin is squirming around nicely.

Jin swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Erwin is now in Jin's guard. A big mistake from Jin there, giving up the dominant position!

Erwin is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Erwin drops back looking for a leg! Jin is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Jin manages to kick Erwin off! Erwin jumps back into Jin's guard.

Erwin avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Erwin wants to control from the top but Jin keeps moving.

Jin escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Erwin gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Jin has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Erwin can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Kobayashi Jin.
I think Jin has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
