PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Braun Westen (ranked 1998 p4p, 2127 weight class) and Sovor Trandel (ranked 251 p4p, 266 weight class). Trandel is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Fuel and Fire - Bride. Braun Westen had a look across the cage there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Braun Westen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sovor Trandel!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, Andrew Berry and Chris Edwards.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Trandel shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Trandel was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Trandel advances to mount.

Trandel is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Westen has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Westen!
Trandel wants to sweep here but Westen controlling him for the moment.

Trandel working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Westen doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Westen manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Our spies down at at Oblivion Gate inform us that Trandel has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?
Westen is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Trandel tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

Westen walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Trandel checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.

Trandel looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Trandel is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Westen has managed to free his arm - good work.

Trandel is working for a kimura from half guard. He's really concentrating on the hold and it's allowed Westen to slip a leg under and get back to full guard.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Trandel drops back, looking for a kneebar! Westen looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Westen looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Westen!

Westen seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Trandel tries to roll over but Westen keeps him under control.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Braun Westen will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Trandel ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Westen moves away.
Westen is looking to counter punch.
Trandel misses with an uppercut.
Trandel has his takedown stuffed
and Westen counters with a straight right hand.
Westen throws a looping overhand right but Trandel ducks down to avoid it.
Trandel has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Westen.
Westen takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Westen connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Trandel momentarily.
Trandel misses with a straight left.
As Trandel backs away, Westen returns fire with a leg kick that just misses.

Trandel changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

Westen throws an off balance right hand

and Trandel counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Westen!

Trandel goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Westen rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Trandel's guard! Nice work there by Westen!
Sovor Trandel has got the better of the ground game so far.
Westen passes Trandel's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Trandel is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Westen pulls his head out easily.

Westen wants to control the pace but Trandel is squirming around nicely.

Trandel keeps trying to improve his position.
Trandel wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.

Westen is hanging on to Trandel's back as he tries to escape.
Westen controlling the position well here. Trandel rolled but Westen kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.

Westen doesn't have the hooks in and Trandel manages to turn into his guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Westen has control of Trandel's left arm, preventing Trandel from doing any damage.
Trandel stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Westen swivels though and keeps the full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Braun Westen showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Westen has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
