PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jake Bird (ranked 235 p4p, 542 weight class) and Jacks Sole (ranked 32 p4p, 84 weight class). Jacks Sole told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jake Bird!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jacks Sole!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, Ben Hemmingworth and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bird steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Sole.
Bird moves out of range as Sole strikes.
Sole changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Sole thows a leg kick but Bird checks it

and Bird counters with a takedown into side control.

Bird thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Bird is looking to take a break and control but Sole is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Sole sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The fighters are battling for position here. Sole manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Bird wants to pass the guard but Sole is keeping the position.

Bird trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Sole manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Sole working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

Sole postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Sole is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Bird keeping moving, preventing Sole from controlling successfully.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
An inside leg kick from Sole misses.
Bird tries to counter by clinching up but Sole breaks away and moves out of range.
Sole misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Bird.
Bird drops down looking for a counter takedown but Sole sprawls and moves away.
Sole lands with a thumping leg kick.
Bird takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.

and Bird counters with a single leg into guard. Sole didn't expect that.

Bird trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Bird might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Sole is looking to sweep but instead, Bird has passed into half guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

That was a close round but I would say that Jake Bird will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Sole is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Bird.

A lull in the action here.
Sole just trying to survive but Bird is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.
Sole is trying to break free.

Bird has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Sole has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!

Bird is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Sole is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Sole breaks Bird's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.

Bird escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Sole gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Bird is trying to control Sole's posture but Sole avoids it.
Sole wants to stand but Bird is controlling his arm.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Sole laying and praying for a moment but Bird takes advantage and regains half guard.
Sole slows the pace down in half guard.
Bird is looking to control Sole's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Bird avoid being mounted?

Bird looking to force a kimura from the bottom here. He's concentrating on that move too much though and Sole pushes past his half guard into mount!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Sole content just to control the position here.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!

A solid leg kick lands there for Sole.

Jacks Sole seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sole misses with a looping right.
Bird drops down looking for a counter takedown but Sole sprawls and moves away.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Sole is trying to maintain the position but Bird is very close to passing his half guard.
Sole is looking for a sweep. Bird is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Bird is taking a breather. Sole says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Sole is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Bird is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Sole is pulling down on Bird's head. It's preventing any offense from Bird, at least for the moment.
Bird passes Sole's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Sole trying to control but Bird postures up.
Bird is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Sole works his way to full guard. Good work.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Sole keeping moving, preventing Bird from controlling successfully.

Jake Bird is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Sole walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Bird checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Bird is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Sole.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jake Bird showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Bird, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
