PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Prana Halo (ranked 408 p4p, 716 weight class) and Luis Maestre (ranked 9 p4p, 18 weight class). Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Prana Halo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 26 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Luis Maestre!
The judges for this bout are James Glass, Steven Brown and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maestre misses with a combination

and Halo counters with a shoot takedown. Maestre fights it but they end up in guard.
Halo passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Halo has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Maestre is not content to let Halo control the position.
Maestre tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Halo looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Halo wants to control but Maestre is keeping him busy.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Maestre is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.
Halo wants to control the pace but Maestre is squirming around nicely.

Halo goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Maestre turns into him and now he's in Halo's guard.

Maestre got a little sloppy there for a moment and Halo has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Maestre has managed to get both his arms back between Halo's legs - danger averted.

Maestre gets to his feet - Halo follows without any prompting.

and Halo decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Maestre's guard.
Halo passes Maestre's left leg - he's now in half guard.

Halo is looking for a kimura but Maestre is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Halo to get the leverage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Halo frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Maestre is desperately trying to improve his position but Halo has a good base and remains in mount.

Halo goes for an armbar but Maestre turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Maestre.

Halo escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Maestre gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Maestre stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Halo shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Maestre connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Maestre looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Halo is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Halo tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Halo has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Maestre must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Halo looking to hit a scissor sweep but Maestre is one step ahead there.

Halo controls Maestre momentarily but Maestre frees himself.
Halo lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Halo not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Maestre keeping moving, preventing Halo from controlling successfully.

Maestre has his foot on Halo's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Halo works his way back into a safe position though.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Halo goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Maestre has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Halo but great work by Maestre.

Maestre stands up.
Maestre misses the shot to the body.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Prana Halo will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Maestre cracks Halo with an open hand slap.
Halo takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.

It looks like Prana Halo has been cut.
Halo looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Halo is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Maestre is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Maestre is not content to let Halo control the position.
Maestre is looking to reverse the position.

Halo thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Maestre is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Halo is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Maestre knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Halo is just content to waste time from the top position. Maestre takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Halo is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Maestre is just riding it out for now. Halo eventually gives up the hold.

Luis Maestre comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Halo has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
