PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Tyson Law (ranked 1249 p4p, 2044 weight class) and Toran Roth (ranked 176 p4p, 273 weight class). Law comes to the cage accompanied by Country Boy Can Survive. The crowd seem to be enjoying Roth's choice of entrance music: Dogodine u Prizrenu. Toran Roth has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Tyson Law's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Tyson Law!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 14 - 2, fighting out of London, Toran Roth!
The judges for this bout are James Glass, Chris Edwards and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Law shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Roth as he avoids it easily.
Roth keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Law is defended easily by Roth.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tyson Law. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Roth fails to land with a series of punches.
Law tries for a takedown but Roth sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Roth will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Law changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Roth throws a nice looking combination but Law bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Law lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Roth has worked on his takedown defense in the runup to this fight and it is paying off so far.
Roth moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Roth misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Roth throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Law.
Law appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Law shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Roth sprawls well. Roth wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Law gets slowly back to his feet.
The fight stays on the outside here - Law looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Law shoots in for a takedown but Roth shows good takedown defense.

Roth is fighting off a takedown attempt but Law is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Roth to the mat. Roth regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Roth is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Law defends well.
Law has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Roth not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Roth has momentary wrist control but Law slips an elbow through the middle.

Roth has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Law can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Law postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Law tries to free his leg and advance position but Roth is retaining full guard.

Law wants to control from the top but Roth keeps moving.
We've been hearing good reports from Law's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Law got a little sloppy there for a moment and Roth has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Law has managed to get both his arms back between Roth's legs - danger averted.

Roth wants to get back to his feet but Law is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Roth controls Law momentarily but Law frees himself.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Law thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Law content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Law passes into half guard.
Law lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Law winds up and cracks Roth with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Law looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Roth with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Law is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Roth defends it well.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Tyson Law will probably get the nod.

Roth working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Law doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Law manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Roth stuffs the takedown attempt from Law. Law gets slowly back to his feet.

Toran Roth seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Law feints and as Roth raises his hands in defense, Law changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Roth has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Law is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Roth is trying to break free.
Law goes for a takedown attempt but Roth pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

and Law counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Law frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Law cracks Roth with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Tyson Law.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Law, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
