PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Damian Tonon (ranked 535 p4p, 1098 weight class) and Johan Christ (ranked 80 p4p, 148 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 19 - 12 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Damian Tonon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, Johan Christ!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Ben Watson and Ron Honeybunn.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Christ on the wrong end of a nice jab.

Tonon drops Christ with a nice combination! Tonon dives into Christ's guard, looking to finish!

Christ is rocked!

It looks like Johan Christ has been cut.
Tonon slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Christ is still in real trouble! Can Tonon finish him?
Tonon forces his way into half guard.
Christ seems to have recovered his senses.
Tonon sitting and controlling from the half guard.
Christ wants to get back to his feet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Christ is looking to escape.
Tonon thows a huge punch but Christ dodges it nicely.

Tonon tries to pass the half guard into mount. Christ knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Tonon not doing much here.
Christ really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Tonon. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Christ wants to stand back up but Tonon manages to pass into side control.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Tonon lands a decent elbow from side control.
Tonon has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Tonon tries to move to mount but Christ blocks the move with his legs.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Christ is pushing Tonon's head away, looking to escape. Tonon manages to hold on to the position though.
Tonon wants to lay and pray for a moment but Christ keeps working.
Christ wants to get back to his feet.

Christ is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
Tonon moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

Tonon thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Tonon is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Christ has escaped the position, nice work there.
Tonon remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Christ is pushing Tonon's head away, looking to escape. Tonon manages to hold on to the position though.
Christ avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Tonon.
Christ is letting Tonon control him for a moment.
Tonon is looking to take a break and control but Christ is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Tonon is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Christ will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Christ pushes Tonon away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Tonon gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Christ is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Christ avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Tonon.
Tonon prevents Christ from escaping the position.
Tonon slows the pace down.

Tonon tries for a kimura but Christ is defending well.
Christ is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Tonon asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Christ is letting Tonon control him for a moment.
Christ felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Tonon tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Christ can do anything to dispel that myth.
Tonon in side control, throwing shots but Christ defends.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Damian Tonon dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Johan Christ's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Tonon looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Tonon swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Tonon is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Christ can do to turn this around?

Tonon shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Tonon showed some decent athleticism there.
Christ scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Tonon manages to mount him!
Damian Tonon overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Christ is squirming around, avoiding Tonon's attempts to control the action.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Christ really wants to buck Tonon off and get back to his feet.
Tonon controlling the pace for now.

Christ is trying to stand but he's just given Tonon his back.
Tonon is punishing Christ with strikes - can he finish him?!
Tonon really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Christ.

Tonon is looking for the choke from the back position but Christ is controlling his hands well.
Christ trying to get back to his feet but Tonon is in full control for now.
A bit of a pause in the action here. Tonon controlling the positon.
Christ wants to get back to his feet.
Tonon controlling from the back.
Tonon seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
Christ is in a world of trouble here. He's outmatched on the ground here and he'd better get Tonon off his back sharpish unless he wants to be submitted.

Christ is trying to get back to his feet but Tonon has full control of the position and if anything, Christ has just worked his way into a worse spot.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Tonon is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.

Tonon is working for the choke. It looks like he might have got it... has he...? Yes! Christ is tapping out! This one is all over!
