PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Derrick Lewis (ranked 515 p4p, 734 weight class) and Bryan Gracie (ranked 74 p4p, 108 weight class). Gracie has chosen Limp Bizkit - Rollin' as his entrance music. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 18 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Derrick Lewis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Bryan Gracie!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Shirou Masuda and Yasuomi Hirokawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gracie feints and as Lewis raises his hands in defense, Gracie changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Gracie drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Gracie jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Lewis is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Gracie controls from within his opponent's guard.
Lewis keeping moving, preventing Gracie from controlling successfully.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gracie passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Lewis tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Gracie wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gracie wants to control but Lewis is keeping him busy.

Gracie goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Lewis has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Gracie but great work by Lewis.
Gracie is looking for a sweep.
Gracie stops Lewis from passing to mount.

Lewis goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Gracie rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Lewis's guard! Nice work there by Gracie!
Gracie trying to control but Lewis is working from the bottom.
Gracie not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
It looks like Gracie might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Gracie drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Lewis manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Gracie has Lewis in his guard.


That's two minutes gone in the round.

Gracie has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Lewis can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Gracie is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Gracie has his foot on Lewis's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Lewis works his way back into a safe position though.
Lewis has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Lewis stands and throws Gracie's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Gracie manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Gracie trying to hold on to Lewis's head to control him but Lewis postures up.
Lewis stalling away here and it's allowed Gracie to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.

Gracie is looking for a triangle but Lewis pushes his legs off easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gracie is trying to control the position but Lewis postures up.
Lewis advances to half guard.
Lewis wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gracie keeps working.
Gracie is trying to get back to full guard.
Gracie wants to control but Lewis is keeping busy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gracie might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Lewis haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Lewis has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Derrick Lewis will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

A slow jab from Gracie misses its intended target.
Gracie misses with an uppercut
and Lewis counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.

Gracie gets the takedown into side control.
My spies in Ludus Magnus inform me that Gracie has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Gracie wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Lewis, who protects the arm well.

Lewis is looking for a sweep.

Gracie is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Lewis is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Lewis makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Lewis.

Lewis is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Gracie is aware though and is defending well.
Gracie stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lewis swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Lewis is trying to control the position but Gracie postures up.

Gracie drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Gracie jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Gracie content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Lewis has locked up a guillotine! Lewis's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Gracie is holding on here and Lewis must be using up a lot of energy. Gracie has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Lewis gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!
